Caminhada pela CASA dos doentes com Leucemia
ONE CRAZY WALK FROM LAGOS TO FATIMA. DE LAGOS A FÁTIMA, UMA CAMINHADA SOLIDÁRIA
Ricardo Martins, em conjunto com a sua namorada Donna o seu cunhado Marco, vai realizar uma grande caminhada entre Lagos e Fátima, entre os dias 14 e 21 de maio, com o duplo objetivo de cumprir a promessa de Ricardo, por ter vencido a leucemia que lhe foi diagnosticada em 2004, e angariar fundos para a casa de acolhimento “Porto Seguro” da Associação Portuguesa Contra a Leucemia (APCL).
Aos 31 anos, foi diagnosticado a Ricardo leucemia das células pilosas, considerada na altura um tipo muito raro de leucemia. Enquanto fazia o seu tratamento no hospital, Ricardo testemunhou na primeira pessoa as dificuldades que enfrentavam os familiares de crianças em tratamento para estar perto delas, muitos dos quais com poucas possibilidades para suportar as despesas. Sem nenhum lugar por perto para ficar e nenhum apoio, essas famílias lutam para pagar as despesas de estar longe de casa neste momento difícil das suas vidas.
Ricardo fez uma promessa a si mesmo e aos seus médicosque o acompanharam: se sobrevivesse faria uma caminhada desde Lagos, onde reside, até Fátima, principal local de peregrinação de Portugal. Determinado a cumprir a promessa este ano, decidiu dar um maior significado à ação, angariando fundos para uma causa com a qual se identificasse. A escolha recaiu naturalmente sobre a APCL, em particular o projeto d cariz social “Porto Seguro”, e que será a primeira e única casa de acolhimento em Lisboa para doentes hemato-oncológicos e suas famílias. A casa está em fase de construção e, neste momento, precisa de fundos para garantir o recheio do espaço.
Com partida marcada para 14 de maio, o percurso entre Lagos e Fátima, levará sete dias a ficar completo, totalizando mais de 340 quilómetros a pé. LAGOS TO FÁTIMA, A CHARITY WALK
Ricardo Martins, together with his girlfriend Donna and his brother-in-law Marco, are going to take a long walk between Lagos and Fátima, between May 14th and 21st, with the double goal of fulfilling Ricardo's promise for winning the battle against leukemia, that was diagnosed to him in 2004, and raise funds for the “Porto Seguro” shelter of the Portuguese Association Against Leukemia (APCL).
Ricardo was 31 years old when he was diagnosed with Hairy Cell Leukemia, considered at the time a very rare type of leukemia. While undergoing his treatment at the hospital, Ricardo witnessed first-hand the incredible financial sacrifices that families have to make to be near their children when they’re hospitalized and undergoing treatment. With nowhere to stay and no support, these families struggle to pay the expenses of being away from home at this difficult time in their lives.
Ricardo made a promise to himself and his doctors who accompanied him: if he survived, he would take a walk from Lagos, where he resides, to Fátima, main pilgrimage place of Portugal. Determined to keep his promise this year, he decided to give the action more meaning by raising funds for a cause he identified with. The choice naturally fell on APCL, in particular the “Porto Seguro” social project, which will be the first and only shelter in Lisbon for hemato-oncological patients and their families in need. The house is under construction and, at this moment, needs funds to fill the space.
Departing on May 14th, the route between Lagos and Fátima will take seven days to complete, totaling more than 340 kilometers on foot.
