Hi! We’re Shaked and Zayit, two Sephardic Jews with a passion for language. We met due to our shared desire to learn the language of our Iberian Jewish ancestors, Ladino.

Ladino is a Jewish language that emerged in medieval Spain, before we were expelled in 1492. Sephardic Jews all over West Asia, North Africa and South America have spoken this language for centuries. Today, however, only the older generations of Sephardic Jews speak it, and most have not passed it onto their children.

In our efforts to preserve and share the language with others, we reached out to Mango Languages, a company that develops language classes for online or app-based learning. While Mango creates content for widely spoken languages, they also produce material for endangered languages, which is free for anyone to access. We believe that an app-based course in Ladino is essential to teaching it to modern learners and preserving it for future generations. A resource like this will be the first of its kind.

Ladino and Sephardim are often overlooked in discussions about Jewish diaspora languages, culture, and history. We believe that making Ladino accessible via a language learning app will inject some much needed attention and support for Sephardic Jews looking to keep their heritage alive.

Any amount* raised will go towards creating a Ladino course (as long as we meet a minimum of $5,000). The more we raise, the larger and more in depth a course we can create.

*Once the fundraiser reaches $50,000, Zayit and Shaked will each keep 2.5% as compensation for organizing the fundraiser and any assistance in developing the course.

שלום! אנחנו שקד וזית, שתי יהודיות ספרדיות עם תשוקה לשפות. הכרנו דרך השאיפה המשותפת של שתינו ללמוד את השפה של אבות-אבותינו הספרדים, לאדינו.

לאדינו היא שפה יהודית שהתפתחה בספרד של ימי הביניים, לפני גירוש ספרד בשנת 1492. משם יהודים התפזרו בגולה לאורך כל מערב אסיה, צפון אפריקה ודרום אמריקה - שם הם המשיכו לדבר את השפה ולשמר אותה במשך מאות שנים. כיום, לצערנו, רק הדור המבוגר יותר עוד מדבר את השפה, ורובו לא העביר אותה הלאה לדורות הבאים.

כחלק ממאמצינו לשמר את השפה ולחלוק איתה עם אחרים, פנינו ל"מנגו שפות" - חברה שמפתחת קורסי שפות ללומדים דרך אפליקציה. מנגו יוצרים תוכן עבור שפות מכל העולם, אך ספציפית עבור שפות בסכנת הכחדה הם נותנים גישה חינמית לכל מי שמעוניין ללמוד אותן. אנחנו מאמינות שקורס לאדינו המבוסס על למידה באפליקציה הוא בסיסי בתהליך הנגשת השפה ללומדים הצעירים, ובתהליך השימור לדורות הבאים. משאב שכזה יהיה הראשון מסוגו עבור לדינו.

הקהילה, השפה, והתרבות היהודית-ספרדית לעיתים רחוקות זוכות לקידום ותשומת לב ציבורית באותו האופן כמו קהילות של תפוצות אחרות, ולכן אנחנו מאמינות שיצירת משאבים נגישים ללימוד לדינו יהווה צעד משמעותי עבור קידום, תמיכה ושימור של תרבות יהודי-ספרד, ויעודד צעירים ממוצא ספרדי להתחבר לתרבות שלהם.

כל סכום שייתרם יושקע ביצירת קורס לאדינו (כל עוד נגיע למינימום של 5,000$), וככל שנאסוף יותר כסף - כך נוכל לממן פיתוח של קורס ארוך יותר ומעמיק יותר.

*כאשר נעבור את הסכום של 50,000$, זית ושקד יפרישו כל אחת 2.5% מהסכום הכולל עבורן כתשלום על עבודת הארגון וסיוע לחברת מנגו בפיתוח הקורס.
