Ladies in the Hat

‘Ladies in the Hat’ engages audiences to revive a time when ‘hats’ told stories of the women who wore them. The goal of this project is to creatively exhibit the amazing collection of vintage hats owned by Houstonian, Paula McHam through first and third person, fiction, and nonfiction theatrical monologues and skits.
With over 100 vintage hats in cue, writers, actors, poets, and visual artists will bring narratives from the past, present, and future to new audiences. ‘The Hats’ will serve as a platform to heal, enlighten, and bring forth a new energy to women from the past whose experiences are often mistold or under-represented in storytelling. This project gives all artists in their varied mediums new, exciting artistic challenges to go to their next levels.
Our team has previously hosted events within the SHAPE Community Center, the Houston Area Urban League, Mixed Emotions Framing & Fine Art Gallery, and the gorgeous Ensemble Theatre. Now engaging the virtual community, we plan to present during each season (every three months) of the year, giving time to develop stories, set props, and secure team and logistics for each presentation.
‘Ladies in the Hat’ aims to show, from production to presentation, that women are capable of reaching their fullest creative potential in modern times through a collective fashionable history.
Over time, we plan to take the ‘Ladies in the Hat’ to the National Hat Museum in Oregon and eventually, establish a hat museum here in Houston, Texas.
