Ladd needs our help. He is injured, unemployed and without a home.

Life came at Ladd Williams fast. His irreparably torn rotator cuff tendon put him out of work. The months he spent living, working, and compensating for it exacerbated a cervical spine injury, which required surgery three weeks ago to fuse 8 vertebrae. Ladd was a long-term renter in Truckee until late 2021 when the all-to-familiar Truckee/ Tahoe housing crisis displaced him, along with countless other locals. His “out-of-pocket” medical expenses are fast approaching $25,000 and he has a long, unemployed road ahead.

Ladd has lost significant sensation and strength in both hands and arms and to a lesser extent has his legs and feet as well. He is hopeful to regain function while he adjusts to life with 8 fused vertebrae. After months of couch surfing, he relocated temporarily to Utah with plans to return home to South Dakota.

Ladd Williams worked in North Tahoe for 30 years, as a Physical Therapist and in other roles within the healing arts. Innately driven to heal and improve the lives of others, he over-delivered by providing care that exceeded the mandates of the health care bureaucracy providing his remuneration. He’d work until the result was achieved, rather than until the clock said: “times up.” He scheduled patients into a packed schedule, performed countless hours of unpaid overtime, and worked pro bono when needed.

Through this arduous, hands-on healing practice Ladd permanently injured his left shoulder. He persevered through the pain and continued to work for 10 more months until he was simply no longer physically capable. He gave all that he had to give, and he has not been able to perform hands-on care since.

A well-meaning acquaintance attempted to advocate for him but ruffled the wrong feathers and the effort backfired. His worker’s compensation payments were cut by $2,000 each month. Ladd hired an attorney.

His greatest desire is to be able to return to some form of practicing PT and to return to Truckee. First things first, Ladd needs to focus on Ladd. Asking for help and healing himself rather than others is counter-intuitive for him.
