My name is Ethan Kim-Shinn; I am a student but, most importantly, a friend of friends of Lach. I heard Lach's situation from a close friend of mine. When Lach made the news public, I heard more and more students trying to find out ways to help him stay. I looked into grants and scholarships for an Australian student studying in Canada. Unfortunately, due to the timing and Quest universities policies, we needed to find another way to raise money.
What is Quest University?
Quest University is a non-secular private Canadian University, located in Squamish, BC. Quest University is also on a block program, where courses are 1 month long and 3 hours a day. Where people focus on one subject in depth in a small classroom setting. At the end of your time at Quest you create a question, it is quintessentially a thesis that you have been constructing over the course of your career.
Quest is also located in one of the most beautiful places I have ever experienced. If you have never visited British Columbia it is worth coming!

Why does Lach want to stay at Quest?

So why do I want to be at Quest University? I think a part of it is that it’s my home. This place is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, any house I’ve experienced. Before coming to Quest, I feel like I lived a plethora of different lives – bouncing around from place to place, never finding where I was going to fit. But then I got here, and it changed in a way I didn’t expect. It forces you to question everything in a way you never have before, pushing me to limits I didn’t even know I had.
But it’s much more than me. It’s those around the community, and I am so lucky to be a part of it. In this place, I’ve met people that are just beyond words. My best attempt is they are people that will capture you and bring fulfillment to your life without a blink of an eye when they don’t even mean to — resulting in a community where things are achieved every day that can’t be fabricated in the outside world across years.
What makes Quest worth it?

Every day I get to witness an act of kindness, courage, compassion, and love that are not expressed to gain something, but for the simple reason that they can. Never have I seen a group of people so willing to overcome challenges and fight for fairness and equality and the most harmonious coexistence achievable. And this does not mean it is perfect – by all means, there are problems everywhere, and Quest shares this too. But the difference is that almost everyone I know here refuses to stop trying, and that is one of the most beautiful things I’ve had the pleasure to witness. It’s for that same reason that I became an RA and a coordinator for our annual drag show. I wanted to give back what I receive daily. I wanted to give those around me their best chance – to allow the extraordinary people of this community to live their truth, find their path, and experience valuable growth for their future while I do the same. And although my reality for continuing this journey grows smaller by the day, I don’t intend to stop looking for more solutions.
Because what kind of a Quest member would I be if I didn’t even try?
