The quick version:
Asking for prayers and donations for 11-year-old Lacey Miller who has had life-altering surgeries due to her body's septic response from un-diagnosed type 1 diabetes. She is the sweetest, funniest most awesome girl that you could ever meet.
Who she is:
Lacey is the daughter of Dereck and Felicia Miller. Her parents have been married nearly 20 years. She also has an 18-year-old autistic brother named Austin. Lacey has a wonderful and loving family life that can also include the occasional meltdown from her brother. She plays the trumpet, participates in winter guard and is great in spelling and art. Anyone who meets her is instantly her friend due to her caring, compassionate and sweet disposition.
What is happening:
On Nov. 9th, 2019, Lacey collapsed and was rushed to a local hospital, where she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and sepsis which caused many life-threatening complications. After being life-flighted to the third hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis, her entire large, and parts of her small intestine, were removed due to damage. She now requires a colostomy bag, a permanent IV for nutrition and insulin shots. Her liver had a blood clot which thankfully dissipated, but not before it had done some damage. Her kidneys were also damaged requiring several dialysis runs. She has been on and off a breathing tube due to her lung collapsing. At the time of this writing, she has been in the ICU for nearly a month. Her doctors, nurses and therapists have been very impressed with her strength, courage, and the fact that she has been able to smile through all the surgeries and procedures.
Why there is a need:
Lacey's family has one income from her father who is a utility worker. Her mother provides full-time care at home for 18-year-old Austin. Dereck has approved Family Leave but is not getting paid while off work. During her family's stay at Riley's, they still have normal bills plus these added medical expenses. Already, there have been over a dozen three-hour trips back and forth from Northern Indiana to Indianapolis in addition to hospital bills and other expenses which are adding up at an alarming rate. While they do have insurance, it is certain medical bills and related expenses will continue into the New Year which also will reset deductibles.
What we will do:
Any money received will go to pay medical bills and expenses due to Lacey’s illness, both now and the immediate future.
One last special request:
While we appreciate prayers, kind thoughts, and donations, also know that Lacey would LOVE greeting/well-wishing/Christmas cards to be sent to her at Riley's in Indianapolis. Also, anyone able to donate to Riley's or the Ronald McDonald house in Indianapolis would be greatly appreciated since it will help other families in need. Spread the word, we would love to have the entire world praying for this special girl.
