Hi my name is AJ and I am 11 years old. My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer when I was only 4 months old and I’m lucky enough to still be with her to this day. My life has always been curious with facts and knowledge about lung cancer. Knowing that she has lung cancer can make me think - “what would life be like without her?” and “how will everything be?”

When I saw my mum receive an award for her lung cancer leadership and everything that she has done with lung cancer, it helped me gain more confidence in making this fundraiser happen.

This November, I have decided to support lung cancer research by selling bright and colorful shoe laces. It’s called Laces4lungs. The laces are so that when people are having a bad day and look down they will think about other people who are having worse days. It also helps people talk more about lung cancer and start a conversation about it. The 4 is because my mum was diagnosed at Stage 4 and I was only 4 months old. And lungs is for lung cancer.

ALK Positive Australia Inc. are a charity founded and run by ALK Positive patients and caregivers, who aim to connect, educate and raise funds to help ALK Positive patients and their care teams in Australia. ALK-positive cancer is a type of cancer with no known cause and no known cure. Commonly ALK-positive cancer is found in Non Small Cell Lung Cancer but it can sometimes be found in other cancer types. This year alone in Australia, it is estimated that 500 people will be given this diagnosis often at the latest stage - Stage 4, where there is currently no cure. Fundraisers like this, are the first step to changing this.
