Mr. Lacayo's New Band Program

Hello there!
My name is Jack, and I was a student of Mr. Lacayo for 3 years during high school. Mr. Emilio Lacayo-Valle played a tremendous role in my growth and development — as a musician and as a person. He made me realize my passion for music and gave me everything a kid could need in support — foundation and excitement, discipline and camaraderie. And this profoundly positive effect on people extended far beyond just myself. His boundless energy lit up every classroom band session we had — giving the students fortunate enough to have his class an outlet of purity and light-hearted joy and an outlet away from all of the stress in their lives.
Mr. Lacayo could not have done a better job. Not only did he take our school’s band from fewer than 10 to nearly 40 students in just a few years, he gave life and meaning to every venue we played — whether it be a football game that the band helped lead to victory or a private concert for the elderly in our community. His beautiful, joyful energy radiated through everything we did as a program. And his speeches to us — speeches of inspiration and motivation — will stick with me for a lifetime. “You guys are wizards,” he once said, referring to the magic we were spreading across our school by “breathing life” into each of our instruments. With this mode of thought, it was very difficult to take a song or part we played for granted. It was truly magical.
Mr. Lacayo recently had to move across the country in order to take care of his elderly parents. His new school lacks a significant amount of musical resources that my school was fortunate to have a budget set aside for. In fact, when Mr. Lacayo arrived at Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll High School, there were hardly any actual instruments in the program at all, with the exception of drumline equipment. With that being said, this campaign is an effort to return the gift of music and life that Mr. Lacayo instilled in so many students, faculty, and parents in my community. All of the funds will go to providing instruments and other necessary components for the formation of the band program at Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School (sheet music, stands, etc.). I am so, so incredibly thankful and it would make me so proud to know that Mr. Lacayo has the resources to continue spreading his legacy of giving.
