Laa Chol’s funeral costs

I am Eva Sarr, an African–Victorian community member and leader who works with African community members and leaders in Victoria, including some South Sudanese community leaders.
After watching and listening to the media and responses to Laa Chol’s passing, it was clear that very little good was being publicly said about her.
So I contacted two key South Sudanese community leaders — Kenyatta Dei Wal and Nyok Gor — who sought permission from Laa Chol’s family for me to place some flowers at A’Beckett St.
In less then twenty-four hours, the response on Twitter grew to about 4000 people. One person suggested we raise funds because the family was struggling to pay for Laa Chol’s funeral. So I decided to start the campaign.
I contacted Kenyatta Dei Wal and Nyok Gor again to seek permission to set up a gofundme campaign. Both leaders contacted Laa Chol’s parents; the family were initially hesitant because “traditionally Anyuak community mourn quietly and peacefully together until the burial".
Eight hours later, I received another email fromKenyatta Dei Wal and Nyok Go informing me that Laa Chol’s parents have now given consent to lead the campaign. Laa Chol’s parents sent messages of thanks to me and the rest of the community working in the background to support the family and the African community.
You may be concerned that I have commercial interests in this campaign. This is not the case. I am leading this alone; I hardly use twitter (see my account) and have never led a campaign like this. I am doing this out of genuine concern for the big picture issue here — showing respect for a young life lost.
The funds, which will be used by the family for her funeral and to support them during this difficult time, will go directly to Laa Chol's uncle. His account details are linked to this campaign.
