Why this Journey?

From December 27, 2025 to January 8, 2026, I will travel to Ipiales and Pasto, in Nariño (Colombia) to learn from and document the cultural re-emergence of “Las Guaneñas” — women whose voices and contributions were historically silenced, but who today are honored as symbols of resistance, memory, community and identity in the region and during the Carnival of Blacks and Whites.

This journey is a part of a Independent research project in the BA Diverse Dance Styles programme at IRIE! Dance Theatre (London, UK).
My research focuses on the body, dance, memory, and women’s narratives within Indigenous and mestizo communities of Nariño.

I want to learn directly from the people who keep this memory alive — not through books, but through shared experience, daily life, and embodied knowledge.

What I aim to do
  • Live and share with community groups, carnival collectives, and cultural tradition-bearers.
  • Hold conversations with women, artists, and knowledge-keepers who embody the legacy of Las Guaneñas.
  • To document forms of cultural resistance through photographs, videos, and narratives.
  • To create a 25-minute dance performance and a photographic exhibition upon my return.

I Will Take You With Me
Throughout the journey, I’ll share:
  • Field notes
  • Photos and video
  • Conversations and reflections
  • Small windows into daily life and celebration
  • This will be a shared journey, not a solitary one.

Closing
This project is about remembering those who were meant to be forgotten.
It honors the strength of women who have carried history in their hands, their labor, their songs, their bodies.
It is a way to listen to memory as something alive, embodied, and communal.

If you’ve read this far — thank you for your time.
If you can support — thank you for helping me walk this path.
If you can share — thank you for helping this story travel further.

Let us walk together with Las Guaneñas.
