Ciao! Mi chiamo Celia Lachunou Mougoue e sono un’aspirante regista e produttrice cinematografica italiana afrodiscendente. Il mio approccio al cinema nasce dalla recitazione: è da lì che è nato il mio amore per questo mondo.

In Italia, come in molti altri paesi, il cinema fatica spesso a rappresentare tutte le sfaccettature della società, lasciando fuori voci e racconti importanti che meritano di essere ascoltati. È per questo che ho deciso di creare un progetto che dia spazio a storie nuove, lontane dagli stereotipi e dalle narrazioni semplicistiche, per mostrare una realtà più vera e inclusiva.

Spesso, agli interpreti neri viene riservato solo uno spazio marginale, o ruoli legati a rappresentazioni stereotipate, come il criminale o l’immigrato in difficoltà. È raro, nel cinema italiano, che venga dato spazio a personaggi neri con profondità emotiva vera e complessa.

È limitante vedere sugli schermi sempre gli stessi volti, le stesse bellezze occidentali, che rispecchiano uno standard mediatico distante dalla vera complessità culturale del nostro Paese.

Così mi sono chiesta: se questo spazio non esiste, perché non lo creo io?

LA STORIA

Fathima è una bambina del posto, ribelle e introversa, che trascorre l’estate in un centro estivo organizzato da un oratorio di Latina.

Quando conosce Jasmine, una giovane volontaria, sente subito qualcosa risuonare: si riconosce in lei e le si affeziona rapidamente, vedendola come una sorella maggiore.

Ma la differenza d’età, di esperienze e di visione del mondo rende quel legame tanto intenso quanto fragile, un legame che, nonostante la forza del sentimento, è destinato a spezzarsi prima della fine dell’estate.

FATHIMA

Fathima è una bambina vivace e intelligente, animata da un forte spirito libero.

È molto matura per la sua età, poiché vive a stretto contatto con il mondo degli adulti.

Nonostante questa maturità precoce, conserva la leggerezza e l’irrequietezza tipiche dell’infanzia, spesso anche cacciandosi nei guai.

Introversa e solitaria, fa fatica a stringere amicizia e tende a chiudersi nel suo mondo.

Tuttavia, quando riesce a creare un legame profondo, come accade con Jasmine, si apre completamente e si mostra per ciò che è davvero.

JASMINE

Estroversa, travolgente, piena di energia: questo è ciò che mostra. Ma dietro al suo carisma, Jasmine nasconde una profonda insicurezza. Ha imparato a mascherare le sue insicurezze con un’apparente fiducia in sé stessa, a tratti persino di superiorità, come se tenere tutti a distanza potesse proteggerla.

Le piace stare con i bambini. Li trova sinceri, meno giudicanti. Partecipa spesso ad attività di volontariato, anche se questa è la sua prima esperienza fuori città, in un campo estivo. E forse, è anche la prima volta che il suo ruolo richiede qualcosa in più di un sorriso e una battuta pronta. Per la prima volta Jasmin si accorge di quanto la vicinanza e l’esigenza di un contatto sia incompatibile con la reale capacita di sostenere l’altro.

LOCATION

Il film sarà girato a Latina (LT), una città che abbiamo scelto per la sua sorprendente varietà di ambienti. Latina alterna spazi pieni di luce e vitalità, che rispecchiano la dimensione estiva e spensierata della protagonista, a luoghi più spogli, silenziosi e abbandonati, in particolare lungo la costa. Questa alternanza ci permette di restituire visivamente il passaggio emotivo che vive la bambina: dalla leggerezza dell’estate al senso di vuoto e disillusione che la attraversa.

La spiaggia, in particolare, è lo spazio chiave del film. È lì che si apre la dimensione più onirica e luminosa della storia: un luogo senza tempo dove la protagonista sogna, gioca, e costruisce i legami più profondi. Ma è anche un confine, un margine, dove si manifestano le prime crepe e si fa strada il cambiamento.

Latina ci offre una cornice reale, fragile e poetica, perfetta per raccontare un’estate che lascia il segno.

NOTE DI REGIA

Una mattina presi appuntamento per farmi le treccine a casa di una parrucchiera senegalese.

Appena arrivata, mi trovai immersa in un mondo che mi sembrava lontano: si parlava in francese, io rispondevo con goffaggine, qualcuno nominava figure importanti per la comunità nera e io annuivo senza sapere davvero di chi si stesse parlando.

Mi sono sentita fuori posto in un luogo che avrebbe dovuto appartenermi.

E allora mi sono chiesta: come può una ragazza afrodiscendente di seconda generazione sentirsi così distante da una parte così centrale di sé?

La risposta, forse, sta proprio nella frammentazione dell’esperienza afroitaliana, nelle sue contraddizioni, nei vuoti, nei silenzi, nelle piccole epifanie quotidiane.

L’idea di questo film nasce da un’urgenza personale: raccontare cosa significa crescere come ragazza afroitaliana oggi, in bilico tra più mondi, più lingue, più aspettative. Ma non voglio raccontare un’unica esperienza, voglio aprire uno spazio in cui emerga la varietà, la complessità, le sfumature , anche quelle scomode o incomplete, di cosa vuol dire appartenere senza sentirsi completamente parte.

Ogni contributo significa dare forza a un cinema più aperto, capace di accogliere la diversità come fonte di ricchezza e ispirazione. Significa sostenere la creatività e l’autenticità, e insieme costruire un racconto più inclusivo del nostro Paese.

Realizzare un cortometraggio non è un’impresa facile, soprattutto per noi studenti. Anche se la nostra passione è infinita, purtroppo le risorse per portare avanti questo tipo di progetto son limitate. Ed è qui che entri in gioco tu. Hi! My name is Celia Lachunou Mougoue, and I’m an aspiring Italian filmmaker and producer of African descent. My journey into cinema began with acting, that’s where my love for this world first took root.

In Italy, as in many other countries, cinema often struggles to reflect the full spectrum of society, leaving out voices and stories that deserve to be heard. That’s why I decided to create a project that gives space to new narratives ,ones that break away from stereotypes and simplistic portrayals, and instead offer a more truthful and inclusive view of reality.

Black performers are often pushed to the margins or cast in stereotypical roles, such as the criminal or the struggling immigrant. It’s rare, in Italian cinema, to see Black characters portrayed with true emotional depth and complexity.

It’s limiting to see the same faces and the same Western beauty standards on screen — a media image that fails to reflect the rich cultural diversity of our country.

So I asked myself: if this space doesn’t exist, why not create it myself?

THE STORY

Fathima is a local girl, rebellious and introverted ,who spends the summer at a day camp run by a parish center in Latina.

When she meets Jasmine, a young volunteer, something clicks: she sees herself in her and quickly grows attached, seeing her as an older sister.

But the difference in age, life experience, and worldview makes their bond as intense as it is fragile, a connection that, despite the depth of feeling, is destined to break before the summer ends.

FATHIMA

Fathima is a local girl, lively and intelligent, with a strong free spirit.

She’s unusually mature for her age, having grown up closely surrounded by the adult world.

Despite this early maturity, she still carries the lightness and restlessness typical of childhood, often getting herself into trouble.

Introverted and solitary, she struggles to make friends and tends to retreat into her own world.

However, when she forms a deep bond, like the one she builds with Jasmine , she opens up completely and reveals her true self.

JASMINE

Outgoing, exuberant, full of energy: that’s what she shows on the outside. But behind her charisma, Jasmine hides deep insecurities.

She has learned to mask them with an appearance of self-confidence, sometimes even a sense of superiority, as if keeping everyone at a distance could protect her.

She enjoys being around children. She finds them honest, less judgmental.

She often volunteers in community activities, although this is her first time working outside the city, in a summer camp.

And maybe, it’s also the first time her role requires more than just a smile and a quick joke.

For the first time, Jasmine realizes how closeness and the demand for emotional presence clash with her actual ability to truly support someone.

LOCATION

The film will be shot in Latina (LT), a city we chose for its surprising variety of landscapes.

Latina alternates between bright and lively spaces that reflect the carefree summer world of the protagonist, and more bare, silent, and abandoned places, especially along the coast.

This contrast allows us to visually portray the emotional journey of the child: from the lightness of summer to the feeling of emptiness and disillusionment.

The beach, in particular, is the key setting of the film.

It’s where the story’s most dreamlike and luminous dimension unfolds: a timeless place where the protagonist dreams, plays, and builds her deepest bonds.

But it’s also a border, an edge, where the first cracks appear and change begins to surface.

Latina offers us a real, fragile, and poetic backdrop, perfect to tell the story of a summer that leaves a mark.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

One morning I had an appointment to get braids done at the home of a Senegalese hairdresser.

As soon as I arrived, I found myself immersed in a world that felt distant: people were speaking in French, I answered awkwardly, someone mentioned important figures in the Black community and I nodded, not really knowing who they were talking about.

I felt out of place in a space that should have belonged to me.

So I asked myself: how can a second-generation Afro-descendant girl feel so far from such a central part of herself?

The answer, perhaps, lies in the fragmentation of the Afro-Italian experience, in its contradictions, its silences, its daily, fleeting revelations.

This film was born out of a personal urgency: to tell the story of what it means to grow up as an Afro-Italian girl today, suspended between multiple worlds, languages, and expectations.

But I don’t want to tell just one story. I want to open a space where variety, complexity, and nuance can emerge, even the uncomfortable or incomplete ones, of what it means to belong without ever fully feeling part of something.
