My name is Rex. I am a 4th grader at La Motte School which is a Gallatin County Rural School outside of Bozeman, MT. I'm hoping to raise money to make our outdoor court at our school bigger. Since we are a small school (about 60 students Kindergarten through eighth grade), we do not have a gym to play in and expanding our small space would be much appreciated by all our students.
At Health Education we sometimes play tag on the basketball court. But with such a small court it's almost as hard as playing inside our small school, but if we made the court wider it would be much easier to play on the blacktop. I got a quote for my Health Education teacher and she said “That would be great".
Here's another great reason you should consider to make it wider.
“Let's work on our five man out offense”, I say.
“We can’t!” Colin says sadly, "The court’s not wide enough I guess we'll just play 1 vs. 1 like usual”, he continued.
This is how so many of our recesses go. No 5 vs. 5 or 4 vs. 4 and sometimes 3 Vs. 3 gets hard too. If the court was wider we wouldn’t have to have these conversations.
Our Bear Canyon Bears boys basketball team is not tall. So if we want to be any good, we have to be able to hit the 3 point shot. But with such a small court it is hard to practice them. If we made the court 6 feet wider on each side we could work on our 3 pointers from the side and the 45% angle without standing on the snow. This is another reason we need to make the cort wider.
Sometimes in the winter you forget your boots. We can all relate to that, but at our school a lot of people forget their boots. When you do, you have to stand on the basketball court. Therefore, we can’t play basketball. And if you try you will bump into each other. If it was wider this wouldn't happen and they might even be able to play tag or basketball on it.
Some people like walking around the blacktop to stay warm during the winter and do not want to get hit with a basketball. If the court was wider, they wouldn't be so worried about getting hit. This is another reason we need to make the basketball court bigger.
If we made the court bigger more people could play without getting crowded. Also, people will be more likely to use half of the court and they wouldn't have to argue with who gets the court. We'll be okay with just getting half of it because it will be so wide.
The costs for expanding the court by 6 feet on each side is about $3000. The itemized costs are as follows: $300 for excavation, $350 for the gravel under the surface, $350 for labor (to offset costs of labor some parents will be donating time), $2000 for the concrete and sealing the surface.
So if there is any money you can donate to my project our school would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for considering!
Sincerely,
Rex
