Refuge Minors in Prostitution
As many people may not be aware, there is a war currently taking place in Cameroon since 2016. However, the effects of the war extend much farther than just the soldiers and those individuals fighting. There are many refugees pouring out of the Northern and Southern Cameroonian regions (NOSO). A vast majority of them are fleeing to the city of Douala, where they find themselves in a different kind of hell. This video is focusing on the prostitution epidemic plaguing these young refugees. Many of these young girls, aged 19 and possibly suddenly find themselves having to survive without families, friends, or any support. For many of them, the only way they will see a meal, or have a place to sleep is by selling the only thing they have left—their bodies. So, these young girls—girls, not women—not only have to deal with the trauma of being in a war, having to leave their homes, and losing everyone and everything they own, they now found themselves at the mercy of the streets. This, of course, places them in the hands of cruel johns eager to take advantage of them, their situations, and their vulnerabilities. This video from Canal2 International, a TV channel in Cameroon depicts the streets, the young girls, the crowds, and how easy it is for these young girls to be sexually abused, mistreated, taken advantage of, and conned. In fleeing their homes, they essentially jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.
