À l’âge d’un an et demi la petite Éléna Banz fût diagnostiquée avec un gliome hypothalamo-chiasmatique, un cancer qui se développe dans les cellules du cerveau ou de la colonne. Même si ce genre de tumeur est souvent considéré bénin et auto-limitatif en potentiel de développement, malheureusement le positionnement du cancer d’Éléna se prouverait fatal.
Éléna Banz est née le 12 Octobre 2017 de Katie Dupuis et Lukas Banz. Ils vivent sur la ferme familiale ovine dans la municipalité de Parisville, Québec. Éléna est une fillette heureuse, souriante et enjouée qui adore jouer avec sa grande sœur Maggy de trois ans et faire toutes sortes d’activités amusantes en famille incluant jouer avec les 200 moutons. Katie, sa mère, est une femme au foyer qui aide aussi son conjoint avec la ferme.
Tout se déroule normalement jusqu’en avril 2019 quand Éléna se mit à avoir des troubles importantes et inexplicables de vision. La famille consulta en optométrie à quelques reprises en vain avant de se faire référer au CHUL à Québec. Les médecins spécialistes découvrent une tumeur derrière l’œil droite d’Éléna au mois de juin et elle fût opérée le 11 juillet. Seulement une partie de la masse fût enlevée et Éléna a reçu le diagnostique de cancer gliome hypotalamo-chiasmatique, une tumeur qui se développe dans le cerveau ou la colonne. Éléna commença ses traitements de chimio au CHUL au mois d’août pour essayer de radier la masse mais les traitements la rendaient trop malade et elle fût incapable de garder ce qu’elle mangeait alors ils furent affaiblis sur mesure.
Le 30 Octobre, juste après son deuxième anniversaire, elle subit une deuxième opération pour essayer d’enlever le reste de la masse. Malheureusement, après cette procédure, Éléna perdra complètement la vue et devint paralysée sur son côté gauche et ne pouvait plus marcher. Elle développa aussi le diabète insipide tout en continuant ses traitements de chimio à Québec, y voyageant avec sa mère. Katie devenait de plus en plus exténuée et bouleversée avec la détérioration rapide de sa pauvre petite Éléna tout en devant s’occuper de sa fille Maggy qui avait maintenant 5 ans et avait commencée la maternelle et suivait des traitements d’ergothérapie et d’orthophonie dans une autre ville loin de Parisville et de Québec. Le 12 Décembre après s’être mentalement et physiquement épuisée auprès d’Éléna qui avait peur de toutes les procédures et affolé par la perte de sa vision, Katie est retournée à la maison pour une journée de répit. À son retour à l’hôpital elle reçût la nouvelle que la DPJ lui avait retiré la garde de sa fille pour lui envoyer en maison d’accueil à Québec proche de l’hôpital pour qu’elle puisse plus facilement poursuivre ses traitements de chimio de façon plus contrôlée et commencer la réhabilitation physique pour réapprendre comment marcher. Et donc, Katie, Lukas et Maggy sont revenus bredouille à la maison deux semaines avant Noël complètement ébranlés. Ils furent permis des visites une fois semaine avec Éléna jusqu’à temps que le Covid fasse en sorte que les visites en personnes soient refusées. Ils ont pu garder le contact avec Éléna en plaçant des appels vidéo hebdomadaires avec ses soignants.
En novembre, Katie et Lukas ont reçu la nouvelle que la tumeur de leur fille avait recommencé à grossir et était maintenant située proche de son cou et de sa colonne vertébrale. Puisque les traitements ne faisaient évidemment plus effet, ils furent arrêtés et depuis ce temps ses jours étaient comptés. Éléna fût transféré à Maison Lémerveil à Québec, une maison pour jeunes polyhandicapés et lieu de rassemblement pour familles. Katie, Lukas et Maggy pouvaient la visiter là les mercredis. La semaine dernière ils ont reçu un appel leur disant que son état de santé de dégringolait et qu’elle dormait presque l’entièreté de ses journées. Lukas et Katie sont allés voir leur fille pour la dernière fois comme elle perdait conscience mais a pu reconnaitre et appeler clairement sa maman. Éléna est morte paisiblement peu après dans l’après-midi du mercredi 16 Décembre 2020.
Nous faisons un appel de dons pour aider la famille avec les nombreuses dépenses reliés aux couts funéraires et pour les couts importants de voyagement et de perte de salaire et de productivité pour son père qui a aussi souffert d'un grave accident de travail en Novembre 2018 et qui a dû par la suite écouler la majorité de ses bêtes pour subvenir à ses dépenses.

Elena was a very happy, smiling and playful baby who loved playing with her sister Maggy and doing all sorts of fun activities with her mom and dad including playing with the more than 200 sheep. Katie is a stay-at-home mom who also helps her spouse with the farm.
Everything was going smoothly until April of 2019 when Elena began having severe eye problems. The family consulted an optometrist to no avail on two occasions before being referred to the CHUL hospital in far away Quebec City. The doctors discovered a tumor behind Elena’s right eye in June of that year and she was operated on July 11th. Only part of the tumor was removed and it was later diagnosed as a benign Chiomastic-Hypothalamic Glioma, a tumor that starts in the cells of the brain or the spine. Elena began chemo treatments at the CHUL in August to shrink the size of the tumor but the treatments made her very sick and she was unable to keep her food down.
On October 30th just after her second birthday she had a second operation to try to remove the rest of the tumor. Unfortunately, immediately afterwards she became completely blind and paralyzed on her left side and could no longer walk. She also developed diabetes insipidus, an uncommon disorder that causes an imbalance of fluids in the body all the while continuing to continue her chemo treatments in Quebec City, travelling back and forth with her mom. Her mom became completely exhausted and distraught with the deterioration of her sick little Elena all the while having to take care of her 5-year-old Maggy who was going to kindergarten and following speech and occupational therapy classes in Victoriaville. On December 12th 2019 CPS took the opportunity to take Elena away from her parents’ care while mom took a few days of respite and left Elena in the care of the nurses at the hospital. Elena was relocated to a group home close to the hospital so Elena could continue her treatments without having to suffer from the hour-long rides to and from the hospital. And so, Katie, Lukas and Maggy were deprived of their daughter and younger sister just before Christmas. They were allowed to visit Elena once or twice a week until April when because of Covid, access to their daughter was denied except for 30-minute online calls. In November they were notified that Elena’s tumor had started to grow again and was now located dangerously close to her neck and spinal cord. Since the chemotherapy treatments were evidently no longer working, the doctors stopped them and from then on, her days on this earth were numbered. She was transferred to Maison Lémerveil in Quebec City a home away from home for severely handicapped and sick kids and a gathering place for their families. Katie, Lukas and Maggy were able to see Elena there once a week on Wednesdays. Last week they received a call to let them know that Elena was sleeping most of her days and that all meds would be stopped. Lukas and Katie went to be with their baby girl who was slipping in and out of consciousness but verbally called out to her “maman”. Elena died peacefully shortly afterwards early in the afternoon of Wednesday December 16th.
We are asking for donations to help this family with the funeral expenses and in order to recover some of the money they spent on travelling and lost productivity for the father who also suffered from a near-fatal work accident in November 2018 and has had to sell off most of his flock to pay the family's living expenses.
