Hello Everyone! My name is Colin Mee. I am currently a senior of a Dual Global BFA Degree in Film Art at Emerson College and Paris College of Art. Right now, I am in the process of writing my thesis Film, “La Dormance”, which will be shot in March of 2025 in Paris. Any contributions toward bringing this project to life would be greatly appreciated!
La Dormance or Dormancy is a short absurdist film that follows a young teenager named Hugo who must navigate the nutty and persistent arguments of his elder relatives at Christmas Eve dinner in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. After having viewed his parents endlessly fighting with their siblings, he begins to rethink the rocky relationship he has with his one and only brother, who is the sole family member who has chosen to be absent from the dinner table.
La dormance comes from critically reflecting on the way I interacted with and saw my family as a teenager. I share a few qualities with the principal character, Hugo, who pursues his perplexing family despite the way they confuse him. Growing up, I was told, by different members of my family, separate definitions of what that word meant. Some said family meant “blood”, some said “love” and some said “those who make you feel at home”. In any way I heard it, it was always told to me, and I didn’t quite have the opportunity to explore what it meant for myself. At the time, all I knew was that I wanted to feel like I belonged with a solid group, and the emotional stability that comes with that. In adulthood, I now know that it’s important for families to define, for themselves, who they are and how they function. Though it confused and sometimes distressed me as a teenager, I see now that my family needed to be in an uncomfortable, traditional form before it could become the healthier web of people it is today.
This film is a culmination of the skills I garnered throughout my educational path in High School and University - from technical theater to directing and writing. I will be working collaboratively with Artem Bakatov who is acting as a Producer and a Director of Photography. Artem has produced 12 films during the time of the degree. We have worked together for the last 2 years on multiple projects.
