Hello everyone,

My name is Alexia, and the woman with me in the photo is my mom, Laurence.

It would be a lie to say that the past few years have been easy for us.

In September 2021, my mom had surgery for an umbilical hernia. The doctors inserted a mesh patch to repair the defect.
In March 2022, during a follow-up appointment, her surgeon became concerned and ordered more tests.
In May 2022, we received the diagnosis: colon cancer (Stage 3).
After months of very difficult chemotherapy, she underwent surgery in November 2022, partly to remove the tumor, but also to remove the hernia patch, which had come loose and ended up looking like a ball of paper. This was followed by several months with a stoma, daily care, and then a third surgery.
In total, she was on sick leave for over a year. Meanwhile, the bills kept piling up.

Then, in June 2023, it was my father’s turn.
Liver cancer (Stage 4). It had metastasized to his spine.
We had numerous appointments and had our home adapted with a hospital bed so he could spend his final days at home with us. Unfortunately, he passed away from sepsis the day before he was due to come home.
We had no savings, and the €4,000 funeral bill was a crushing blow. That was the first time I turned to the GoFundMe community, and they helped me raise €400.

Today, I’m once again asking for your generosity.

Mom is in the home stretch. After giving her body time to recover, it’s time to get this over with and have another surgery for the umbilical hernia she’s been living with every day for the past five years. The surgery is scheduled for October 19, 2026, but here’s the thing: this surgery comes at a cost.

She’s been receiving care from the start at a private hospital an hour and a half away from our home. It wasn’t a choice. We live in the countryside, where hospitals are few and far between, not always well-equipped, and, above all, overcrowded. The hospital where she’s being treated was simply the one that had the fastest availability for her cancer care. But a private hospital means significant out-of-pocket costs.

The estimate is clear: €362.30, of which €72.30 is covered by Social Security and €57.84 is covered by our supplemental health insurance. That leaves us with over €230 out of pocket.

To some people, it’s nothing, but for her, after years of back-and-forth, bills, loan payments, and all that without ever having any savings, and with two teenagers still to support, it’s a lot to handle.

So I’d like to be able to help her. But here’s the thing: I can’t make ends meet either. I’m doing my best to help. I take care of my sisters, I handle the grocery shopping and some of the bills, but both my mother and I are still in a precarious financial situation.

So why €350?
To cover the surgery, as well as the hospital stay and the gas needed to take her to the hospital and pick her up when she’ll be ready to come home.

Every donation will make a huge difference to us and we thank you in advance for your help.

Donc j'aimerai pouvoir l'aider.
