My brother Erik is the most hard working, honest, fair and kind man I know. He works a minumum of 40 hours (and as much over time as he can get) each week to support his family that he loves with all his heart.
On Sunday the 11th of October he was in a minor ATV accident with the major consequence that he lost most of his hand and almost lost his life. After the accident he had to walk a mile with his injured hand (while caring for 2 children who were uninjured) and lost so much blood that his heart failed on the helicopter to the hospital. (He had refused the helicopter flight originally that saved his life because he knew he could not afford it.) The medics were able to bring him back to us. In the next few days he had 2 operations which removed 3 of his fingers and put a graft of muscle and skin from his thigh on his hand. He will never have use of his hand to work again but with a prosthetic he will be able to have some ability to grab things.
He did not have health insurance at the time of the accident. We estimate his hospital stay could be as much as 500,000 and that does not include the helicopter, doctor fees, or any of the prosthetic he will need in the future. We plan to advocate to reduce those fees but they are astronomical for any family.
I love my brother with all my heart and he is a person who makes the world a better place just be being in it. It would mean the world to me if he and his wife and son did not have to worry about loosing more than his hand in this terrible accident. Any help you can provide would be tremendoulsy appreciated.
