Hello.

In November, 2015, my mom went to the doctor’s office worried about a lump in her breast. Initially, they told her it was probably nothing.

Fast forward to mid-January 2016,  and my mom is recovering from a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, which spread very quickly and aggressively.

This came as a shock to us all, since the initial prognosis was very promising. As you can imagine, the surgery was an extremely painful and difficult decision for her to make.

To make matters worse, three days before her surgery, she was notified that she was being dropped by her insurance.

After much negotiation, she was finally able to get the plastic surgeon to go ahead with the surgery as long as she signed paperwork assuming full financial responsibility for what could potentially cost into the $100's of thousands with complete reconstruction.

Initially, the doctors told us that although it would be a painful process which would put her out of commission for months, the surgery would make her cancer free. This was apparently too hopeful, as now she could be facing further treatments, which include IV chemotherapy and radiation, and 5 years of the cancer pill.

The reconstruction also includes numerous procedures and further surgeries, all which require additional funds.

My mom has appealed the decision to drop her insurance and has been working very hard to get it reestablished, all while trying to recover and trying to still be the super mom that she always has been!

Not only are her medical bills piling up, but also her living expenses, as she is focusing on her recovery now and unable to work. The stress that this is causing her is not conducive to healing well.

As you can imagine, my Mom is exhausted from all of this, on top of the responsibilities that she has as a single parent, taking care of my 11-year-old sister Lily.

Friends and family have been wonderful helping out in practical ways, but I am very limited as to what I can do because I am 3,000 miles away finishing my senior year of  college in California. My sister and I love our mom very much! We both want to see her get well, and be around for all of our important milestones. She has always been there for us, and now, in her time of need, we want to be there for her. However, as a middle-schooler and a college student, we cannot do much to help financially, and we were hoping that if some of the financial burden were taken off her she would have a much quicker and easier recovery.

You may know and love our mom and we would appreciate you opening your hearts to her at this time.

Thank you so much!

Love,
Ali & Lily Dunton
