Support Remington's Recovery Journey

Hello, I’m Kayla, Remington's mom. On April 30, between 5:30-6:30, Remington was at a family friend's house where he had an accident on a trampoline that ended with 2 ER trips and needing “surgery”. Remington was jumping with some neighbor kids when his leg was grabbed while jumping. He ended up falling, which resulted in a spiral fracture on his left femur. We didn’t know what hurt initially because he was saying both of his legs were hurting, and he was crying so hard that he just wanted to sleep.

We let him sleep for a half hour to calm down so that he would hopefully be able to tell us what was wrong, but he couldn’t stay up longer than 20 minutes. I then tried to get him to stand by supporting him under his armpits, and he didn’t want to put any weight on either of his legs. By this point, Michael and I agreed we should take him to the ER. They rushed him to the back and looked him over. Within 30 minutes to 1 hour, X-ray came into the room and asked where his doctor was after just one image. They gave him Motrin and didn’t splint his leg. His doctor came in and informed us that he has a fractured femur and we will need to go to Minot, which is a minimum of 2 hours one way, for an orthopedic surgeon to put a cast on because they don’t do the kind that Remington needed here in Williston. I asked if we could bring him or if we would be going by ambulance or lifeflight. He responded by telling us that due to the kind of break he sustained, CPS would have to be notified and we were advised against bringing him to Minot ourselves because of that. He informed us an ambulance would be here around 10:00-10:30 pm. The ambulance got us at 10:15 pm, and we got to the Minot ER around 12:05 am. We had to wait for a room on the peds floor to become available, and during that time, they gave him pain meds, which was about an hour and a half after we arrived. We got a room around 1:50 am and were informed he was going to be taken to the OR at 7 am to have the orthopedic surgeon realign his leg and put a cast on it. The orthopedic surgeon came and talked with us at 6:30 am, and he was headed to the OR at 6:55 am. The anesthesiologist and orthopedic surgeon told us it would take about an hour. He came out of surgery at 8:15 am and slept till 10:30 am. We were in the peds room till 3:30 pm Thursday, where they wanted to make sure he could eat and drink without throwing up before giving the okay for him to go home.

We have an appointment on May 12 for more X-rays, and we have to travel to Minot for appointments and to get the cast removed. We aren’t sure as of right now if he will need physical therapy once he no longer needs to have the cast on; this will be determined after the cast has been removed. The doctors are hopeful the cast can be removed after 4 weeks, but it is still to be determined.

Due to the kind of break Remi experienced, BOTH of his legs had to be put in a cast in order to help stabilize the bone. Because of this, we were given special buckles in order to transport him home from the hospital and to future doctor's appointments until he can have the cast removed.

We live comfortably within our means as a family of 3 with Michael being our sole provider. Unfortunately, with only one person working outside the home bringing money in, this very scary and unimaginable event will be costly due to having to travel 2 hours in each direction to and from doctor's appointments to see the orthopedic surgeon in Minot. We are extremely grateful that our baby boy is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances we are in. Any and all help is very much appreciated!
