KYVENS STORY

A routine checkup with Kyven’s pediatrician on September 22, 2014 was the day that changed our family’s life forever. The doctor felt his stomach and after realizing that he had an enlarged spleen and liver, he suggested I get Kyven seen by the Arnold Palmer hospital in Orlando Florida, as soon as possible. Once we arrived, they performed tests and then escorted us to the oncology unit. After waiting there for what felt like an eternity, the physician assigned to Kyven’s care, Dr. Sutphin (who we have come to love) finally came in with an update. The four words that came out of his mouth next will haunt me for the rest of my life, “Your child has cancer”.  Kyven was 7 years old and was given a diagnoses of leukemia.

He went through 3 1/2 years of chemotherapy treatment and at the end we crossed the finish line feeling triumphant...he beat it! Kyven was in remission for 21 happy months. He could enjoy life as a normal kid and was back in school, and with his family again. It wasn’t until September 2019 when I took him for his routine lab check up where we found out yet again Kyven’s cancer had returned. This time he was diagnosed with MDS with momosomy 7 and an intense grueling round of chemotherapy started up again. On October 11, 2019 Kyven underwent a bone marrow transplant, with his sister Kenidi as his donor. After the transplant we spent 34 days in the hospital and then moved to the Ronald McDonald house until December. It was almost three months of being away from the rest of our family.

It has been almost a year since the transplant and up until a few weeks ago Kyven was doing great. He recently started getting headaches, fevers and his platelet county dropped tremendously. He was admitted to the emergency room and had a bone marrow biopsy. The next morning the results came in indicating the MDS had returned. He is getting his broviac and starting his third round of chemotherapy on Tuesday September 22, 2020.  We are anxiously waiting to see who his next donor will be.

We could not have made it this far in our journey with Kyven without the love and support of our family and friends. Our mission for Kyven is total remission and so this leg of the journey will be challenging on all levels spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Your support will help us financially cover some of the medical expenses, medications, and what will be the weekly and countless road trips back and forth to Orlando's Arnold Palmer hospital for chemo treatments. We cannot be more grateful to you for your prayers, love and financial support in helping our son Kyven fight for his life right now.

With gratitude,

Amber, Geoff, Kaden, Kenidi, Kyven and Kieven
