Greetings friends! As some of you know, my name is Katie Jaeger, and I'm a United States Peace Corps Volunteer placed placed in a small village in Botswana, right on the border of South Africa. Upon my arrival to Mokatako (my village) I never considered getting a pet during my service. How could I take on a pet knowing I'd have to leave it behind when my two years was up? However, life had other, more furry and playful plans for me. Shortly after my arrival I received the best gift I have ever gotten in my life. One of my students gave me a puppy to welcome me to Mokatako. Apprehensive at first, I ultimately and unequivocally fell in love. The little ball of fur wagged and licked her way into my heart, and it was the beginning of one of the most meaningful relationships I've made during my service.
Petunia is my shadow. Everywhere I go, she's right there behind me. She's offered me so much while being here. She's been my comfort in my greatest times of need, literally licking away my tears and staying close when homesickness is unbearable. She is my company. Whether we are taking a walk through the village or sharing a bowl of popcorn while we watch media on my laptop. She offers me protection. She follows me to school and sleeps at the back of my class when I'm teaching. Everyone in the village knows Petunia, and she knows all of them, eager to greet them and give them kisses.
When I go on leave Petunia stays with a boy on my compound and he takes great care of her. When I got back from my most recent vacation, a teacher from my school told me that every time I leave, Petunia runs to school every day and checks in all the classrooms for me. Needless to say, we are quite the tight pair.
Now I only have about 7 months left and my service is winding down. I'm desperate to get my sweet girl back to the States with me come October. It's quite expensive to ship animals from Africa, so I'm humbly asking my friends and fellow animal lovers for help. I can't bear the thought of leaving her here, as she has been such a saving grace and an integral part of my service. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your help, Petunia and I can't wait to get back and see you all. Love & Light.
