Kyrsha's Return to China

Hello all!

I am a Senior at Cleveland State University majoring in Health Sciences on a Pre-Med track. Upon graduation, I intend on pursuing a Master's degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and/or applying to medical school.

As a child, Mulan was my favorite Disney princess simply because she defied stereotypes as a woman an exemplified strength, resilience and beauty. Through watching this movie, I became interested in the beauty of Chinese culture and language.

We are all familiar with the language requirements that most high schools have. I knew that when it came to choosing a language to learn, I wanted something challenging. I did not want to take the path most have and learn Spanish or French. Chinese was once taught at my high school but due to little interest, they no longer offered it. My fallback was to learn German, but even then, I was not content. It was then, during my sophomore year, that I learned of an opportunity to learn Chinese through distance learning, taught by a teacher at another local high school. I was 1 of typically 3-4 other students who stayed after school to participate in a distance-learning opportunity. It was from here that my interests in Chinese language and culture truly began to grow.

As I am sure many of you have heard, learning Chinese is difficult, yet, I continued to take Chinese language and culture classes in college until there were no more for me to take because, like in high school, there was very little interest in learning that language. Once I completed what was left to offer, I did not feel content with my fluency in the language. I could have retaken the classes I had already completed, but I knew that the teachers would be lenient with me because they understood how difficult the language was for students to learn. At that point, I knew it was time for me to make a dream of mine reality. I was going to put myself in an environment where I was forced to learn the language and constantly surrounded by it; I was going to study abroad in China. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision
and I am so grateful for the Center for International Services & Programs (CISP), specifically Ms. Julie Good, who turned my spur-of-the-moment decision a reality in a matter of a day. Through the help of CISP and Julie, I was a recipient of various scholarships which helped fund my trip abroad tremendously.

I did an Intensive Language Program through International Studies Abroad (ISA) in Shanghai, China from June 28, 2016 to August 13, 2016. There are no words to describe my experience there.  I learned more than I could have anticipated in my short time there and gained friends for a lifetime. I have added some pictures for visual representation!

Interview about me and my trip: http://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/home-gallery/26/

The reason I have made this page is that I am ecstatic to share that I have applied and have been approved to take on an internship at a hospital in Shanghai, China in starting May 23, 2018. Because I enjoyed my time in China so much, I wanted to go back and apply it to my career goals and take those transferable experiences and skills into my practices as a future physician. In my practice, I aim to work with communities who face cultural and language barriers in healthcare. My goal as a physician is to eliminate and alleviate as many of those barriers as I can.

I am ineligible to apply to many of the scholarship received to fund my last trip which is why I have chosen to create this page. My story is lengthy because I want those who read it to know how much these experiences mean to me.

I am projecting a total cost to be around $7,500 with wiggle room for any unexpected costs leading up to my departure.
- Program Cost: ~$5,505
- Visa: ~$140
- Plane Ticket: ~$1,500

Additionally, I am diligently searching for scholarships to apply for as well as saving where I can.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page and read my story. I sincerely hope that you will consider supporting my return to China.

If you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to ask.

Warmly,
Kyrsha Goodwin
