Nyema and Diante Bowman are wonderful parents to Kyrie (3), Niyah (10), and  Cam’ron (13). During the middle to the end of January, Nyema and Diante noticed appetite and weight loss changes in their youngest child, Kyrie. Around that time Cam’ron was playing football with his baby brother Kyrie when Kyrie complained of leg pain after falling. Thinking he had rolled his ankle and walking with a noticeable limp, his parents took him to his Pediatrician where x-rays were taken of his stomach and leg. It was determined that he had no broken bones or injury to his leg and they were advised to give him stool softeners to help with his stomach discomfort. A few days later, Kyrie was still complaining of leg pain, had stopped eating, was sleeping all day and was running a fever. Thinking this was possibly the flu, his parents took him back to the emergency room on February 16, 2020 where a flu test, a number of blood tests, and x-rays were taken.

Expecting to be sent home with antibiotics and a Tylenol prescription for the flu, Nyema and Diante were instead sat down and explained that Kyrie has B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Also known as BALL, B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer that occurs when a bone marrow cell develops errors in its DNA. A plan was instantly put into action and Kyrie was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) and admitted to the AFLAC Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. Within Kyrie’s first 24 hours of being admitted he has undergone a spinal tap, has 2 bone marrow and fluid extractions, had a chemotherapy port placed in his chest, placed on an aggressive treatment plan, started chemotherapy and had to be placed in Pediatric Intensive Care. His spinal tap results confirmed the presence of leukemia in his spine. This disease moved rapidly through his body and has affected his ability to walk. Kyrie spent a few days in the PICU receiving other treatments on top of his chemotherapy due to acid and calcium issues that were found. He has been placed back in the Cancer and Blood Disease Center where he will remain for at least the next few weeks to months to continue his chemotherapy, infusion treatments, and antibiotics. Once Kyrie is allowed to go home his treatment plan includes weekly chemotherapy and other treatments including blood transfusions for the next 3 years minimum.

Kyrie is the baby of our family. He has brought so much joy to our lives. He is following in the foot-steps of his dad and older brother in his love of football. He is handsome, kind, funny, strong (so strong), charismatic, and everyone is his friend! Prior to his illness Kyrie played center, wearing the #5 for his undefeated flag football team. It is also fitting that Kyrie loves superheroes from Black Panther to Mr Incredible, as he is our superhero. He is a fighter and is fighting hard right now. We can’t wait to see Kyrie back on that field!

During his treatment and recovery, it has been decided that his mother will take time off from her job to be Kyrie’s full-time caregiver and his father will continue to work his 2 jobs. Unfortunately, Nyema will not receive any pay during her time off. The Bowman’s also have a beautiful 6-year-old rottweiler named Egypt who has degenerative hip issues and has become immobile. Egypt is in diapers and has to be changed multiple times a day and cleaned up after. Unfortunately, with the amount of attention that both Kyrie and Egypt will need they will not be able to keep Egypt. If you know of anyone in the Atlanta area that can care for an adult rottweiler with hip issues please let me know. As you can imagine all of the aforementioned treatments, bills and continued care for Kyrie will impact The Bowman family financially for some time to come. I am asking that you please consider donating to help Nyema and Diante with current and upcoming bills, and continued medical costs. For those unable to donate I ask that you please keep the Bowman family in your prayers during this tough time. Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to help!
