Kyrie's Surgery: A Loving Family's Plea
Donation protected
Our giant (approximately 10-year-old) 20lb fur baby Kyrie needs gallstone removal surgery to address chronic gallstone issues that are causing pain, nausea, and vomiting. He was hospitalized in March and has had imaging and blood tests to confirm. This first stay cost us more than $6000, and we are still paying that off. He had a long course of antibiotics that he was very responsive to, but it isn’t feasible long term. Surgery has been advised as the only long-term solution to his problems.
We are expecting MedVet Cleveland costs to be at least $7500. Unfortunately, when we adopted him 2 years ago, he had some milder symptoms of this, so it’s a pre-existing condition and not covered by pet insurance.
We are able to keep him stable with medications until we can afford the surgery, but we are also saving up for our future green card application this year or next (also $7000+), and so the possibility of both of these bills is daunting and depressing on our income.
While I work full-time in scientific research and have several volunteer roles in public health, we have less than $500 in savings.
(yay for renting and auto loans /sarcasm).
To make things harder, as immigrants, we only have access to high-interest rate credit cards (that we can’t afford to pay back quickly), and care credit won’t cover us for more than $1500. We are stuck for options that won’t cripple us long term as our visa restrictions mean that Luke can’t work and I can’t take on further employment.
Kyrie’s favorite hobbies are hanging out on my desk while I work and enjoying the sunshine, chewing cardboard and grass, going on walks on a leash, and eating churu treats.
Thanks for reading and please share.
