“Her Fight Is Our Fight”
Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. And this analogy is certainly true for the Showalter family.
In December 2019, Kym had her regular mammogram appointment. A small lump was detected, biopsied and found to be cancerous. Kym chose the most aggressive treatment to alleviate the fear of cancer returning, a double mastectomy with reconstruction and chemotherapy. She endured every procedure like the warrior she is, with faith, grace and dignity. (There may have been some “F” bombs dropped here and there along the way, not gonna lie.) There was no reason to believe that cancer would return. It was caught early and Kym did everything in her power to keep it at bay.
Unfortunately, cancer had different ideas. Kym began experiencing symptoms and after a Pet Scan, it was discovered the cancer was back. Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer with evidence it had spread to her liver and sacrum. She underwent a liver biopsy in December and had a port placed for the eventual chemotherapy that the City of Hope doctor felt was best to fight her disease. She had her first chemo right after Christmas and the second round was scheduled for January 19. However, Kym’s liver was very unhappy and she wasn’t feeling well at all. They went to her doctor appointment on January 18 and instead of getting the go-ahead for chemo, they ordered an ambulance to transport her from the City of Hope to the hospital for further evaluation. She underwent tests and they found a blood infection and is being treated for that. They will meet with her oncologist to discuss the next steps to take.
People ask “what can we do to help?’ Right now, the answer is to help monetarily to offset the unknown and accumulating expenses associated with this battle. Any amount will be hugely appreciated. If you could share this message with all of your contacts, let’s flood social media and show Kym, Jeff and James that we love them like crazy. Pray for healing and to give her doctors all the guidance they need to help Kym beat this evil, cruel, unforgiving disease.
