My lovely partner, Kyle Havlick, was home near Boulder, Colorado for the holidays with her mama and younger brother when an apocalyptic nightmare unfolded.
She was meant to return to our adopted town of Squamish, BC, on Monday; however, she came down with our favourite new form Covid, spending the last few days hidden away in the basement of her family's house, trying to sleep herself back to health.
On Thursday, Dec 30, gusts over 100mph (160km/h!) downed powerlines, setting the fields surrounding their community ablaze. The fire spread with astonishing speed, quickly going from smoke in the field to an entire subdivision in flames. Thankfully, Kyle's step-dad, Tyler was dropping by and sounded the alarm. Her mom, Ainsley, and brother, Caden (along with lovable golden doodle, Maui) fled the home without much other than the clothes (pyjamas in Kyle's case) on their backs.
I don't want to imagine what might've happened if Kyle was home by herself, ensconced in a Nyquil coma as the flames engulfed the family home. A few minutes could've made this a very different story.
Everyone escaped and is safe, but their entire neighbourhood was decimated. There is nothing left of the structure at all; only bones of twisted metal as the embers settled. Irreplaceable photos and mementos of childhood are lost forever, and insurance will only cover a portion of the lost possessions which have taken a lifetime to accrue. Kyle alone lost her wallet, passport, all clothes, outerwear and climbing gear brought on the trip.
Every Christmas gift has been reduced to ash.
This was the family home, at 332 Fox Ln, Superior, CO
Right now, Ainsley, Caden and Kyle have nothing, and are living in a few shared Tshirts and sweats while staying with friends. Options for places to go are limited as Kyle is still recovering from illness. Insurance will eventually cover a portion of the loss, but the family need money now. It is winter and they have no home, no clothes, no possessions. Of course, they would never ask for help - so I'm removing the option to unduly suffer even more.
They need money for clothing, winter wear, food and rental housing as a stop-gap while they can start rebuilding their lives over the coming months
.
Please share this with anyone who might be able to help.
