Hi, my name is Kyle Barrera. I’m 29 years old, and I’m reaching out with deep humility to ask for your support during one of the most difficult times in my life.
in 2012, I was diagnosed with Glaucoma, a lifelong and incurable eye disease that causes gradual vision loss. Over time my condition has severely worsened my right eye is now almost completely blind. On top of that I was diagnosed with Keratoconus, a condition that affects the shape and health of my cornea, making my vision even more impaired.
despite everything I’ve always tried to stay strong for my family. I have a loving wife and one young child who depend on me. Before my condition progressed, I worked hard everyday to support them. I never asked for help I always gave my best. But now things changed.
Because of my worsening vision, I can no longer work. I am currently fighting to save the remaining 43% vision in my left eye, which requires almost yearly Operations just to slow down the damaged. On top of that, my disease requires me to use four different kinds of eye drops every single day, which cost a lot and are essential to keep my condition from getting worse.
The cost of surgeries, medications, and daily treatment has placed a heavy financial burden on my family. Your support no matter how small I will go a long way in helping me continue this fight and provide for the people who rely on me most.
from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness and generosity.
How It Started
It all began on September 9, 2012, when I experienced a severe headache that lasted for seven straight days. Worried, I went to see an ENT doctor who told me it was just bronchial sinusitis and prescribed some medication. But the pain continued, and I knew something wasn’t right.
I went back for another check-up, and that’s when Dr. Ho from Mandaue Cebu Hospital noticed something alarming — the pressure in my eye was 29 mmHg, much higher than the normal level of 20. Elevated eye pressure like this can be a warning sign of Glaucoma, a disease that affects the blood flow to the eye, like a balloon filling with water that could burst if not released.
I was sent for a series of eye exams and a CT scan to rule out any brain issues — thankfully, there was nothing found. But the eye tests revealed something heartbreaking: a blind spot had already developed in my right eye, one of the early signs of Glaucoma.
At the time, I was just a college student — a scholar at the University of Cebu — with no idea how serious and life-changing this disease could become. I was advised to start using Glaucoma eye drops to reduce the pressure and stop the vision loss from progressing. But I couldn’t afford the medications.
Within a year, my condition worsened. I had to stop school and undergo an operation called Trabeculectomy to save what vision I had left. Since then, I’ve had to be closely monitored every 3 months and strictly follow my doctor’s instructions, especially when it comes to taking my medications on time. But with the financial struggles my family faces, it’s been very hard to keep up.
Our Situation
I was forced to stop working because of my worsening vision. I can no longer read or see clearly—my right eye is almost completely blind, and I only have 43% vision left in my left eye, which is also affected by Keratoconus, causing double vision and making it impossible to read or focus properly.
My wife is also unable to work because she needs to take care of our young daughter while also helping me with my daily needs. We are doing our best to stay strong, but the emotional and financial burden has become overwhelming.
Why We’re Asking for Help
I never thought I would be in this situation, but I’m holding on to hope — I want to save the remaining vision I have, so I can continue to see my growing daughter and my beautiful wife, who has stood by me through everything.
All I want is to give the best life I can to my family and not be a burden to them. But with my condition, the cost of treatment, medications, and surgeries has become too much for us to manage on our own.
We are humbly asking for any support you can give — whether it’s financial, emotional, or spiritual. Every amount will go directly toward:
My daily medications
Future eye operations
Regular check-ups and monitoring
Basic living expenses during this time
We also ask for your prayers — for strength, healing, and hope as we face this journey together.
If you're unable to donate, please consider sharing this page with your family, friends, or community. Every small act of kindness makes a huge difference.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
With gratitude,
Kyle and Family
