At midnight last Thursday night, Zach and I were robbed at knife point by four men while we were camping in Oxnard, CA. It was our first night on a 6-week, 1500-mile long cycling trek from LA to Seattle. They threatened to shoot us and kill us if we did anything, and later the police said they were surprised we got away without a scratch. The four men stole everything we had... camping gear, clothes, a laptop, phones, wallets with IDs & credit cards, passports, 35mm film cameras with photos I'll never get back, and tragically our bikes. We lost just over $8,500 worth of stuff in the matter of minutes, and were left running in our socks.

After the past week of getting our lives slowly sorted out, I've realized the biggest expense of it all was my Diamondback Haanjo 7C Carbon bicycle. Zach's insurance is covering just about everything he lost, but I didn't have coverage on my bike. 

My bike was valued at about $2,500 and a few very kind friends have already donated $500 toward me getting a new one. I'm hoping I may be able to raise at least another $1,000 to try and get a new one soon.


We are so very glad to be alive and okay. And now as I begin to regain normalcy, I hope to start cycling again to work off some of this anxiety and stress.
