Kyle John Spaulding

Hi, my name is Kyle John Spaulding. I am a 25 year old hard-working, nature-loving, small town guy. I was born and raised in a little town in central Vermont called Tunbridge, and consider myself quiet, humble and self-reliant.

On September 12, 2023, in the midst of a great adventure in my life working a seasonal job in the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, I was driving when a massive elk ran into the road. When swerving the car to avoid hitting the elk, I lost control and crashed.

My neck was broken upon impact and I could not move. After some time, two good samaritans came upon the scene and called 911. Park paramedics had me air lifted to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center’s Trama II emergency room. My C7 vertebrae had burst so the medical team removed it and fused my C5, C6 & T1 vertebrae. I cannot feel or move my body from the chest down and my surgeon says I will likely be in a wheelchair for the remainder of my life.

Every day since has brought a lot of pain. I am very scared, but am also determined to walk on my own again some day. I know it will be a long road to recovery, but I have a dedicated family who will be helping and encouraging me throughout my journey.

After eight days in the ICU, I’m showing enough progress that they have moved me into a step down unit where I am working to become strong enough to be moved to an acute rehabilitation facility that specializes in spinal injuries.

Despite my having health insurance, there are many related expenses already that were not covered (emergency medical transportation for example), and many more to come.

I’ve never asked for help in my life, but I’m asking for it today. If you have the means to help, please consider giving whatever you can so I can pay for the services that were not covered, and to help with the future expenses while I rehabilitate. With continued professional services, and the dedication and resolve that I have, and the love and support of my family and friends, I know I can walk again one day.
