Hi, my name is Kyla Heard,

I have some exciting news to share. I've applied and was accepted to participate in a study abroad program with the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages (UHPFL). In June 2023, I will be traveling to Oviedo, Spain for six weeks.

IUHPFL has been sending high school students abroad for approximately 60 years with an exemplary record of safety, security, and service. IUHPFL offers an incredible variety with 11 programs in 7 countries. The program prides itself on four distinct pillars which is why I have a golden

opportunity before me. These pillars include:

1. Language Commitment: l will only speak the host language for the duration of my experience. It will be a challenge but is key to obtaining maximum goals as I strive to master the language and fluency.

2. Academic Instruction: I will participate in weekday classes in Culture, Grammar, Literature, Communication and Linguistics. After class I will participate in activities such as theatre, dance, choir, and sports.

3. Host Family Experience: I will become a member of a host family. This will be my home away from home experiencing daily living and sharing weekend outings. This will provide me with firsthand experience of their culture and customs. All these experiences with them will result in priceless memories for me.

4. Community Engagement: This component of the program is an activity where we interact with the residents of the country in different settings such as community, school, and animal rescue centers. This summer experience will heighten my leadership and cross cultural skills; enhance my independence and give me a competitive advantage for entrance into college.

My family and I are super excited about this opportunity ... a little nervous, yet excited! The program does not offer financial support and it is my responsibility to raise funds to cover the cost and spending money. My goal is to raise 8,000 dollars.
