Hello, my name is Kye and I am a 26 year old Native Hawaiian & Asian trans non-binary person seeking help with housing & relocation funds for me and my partner (+ our 2 cats). My partner & I are both chronically ill trans masculine individuals that are looking to leave Los Angeles to seek safer and more affordable housing in Nevada.

This move would not only allow us a safer living options, but would also put us closer to both of our families that live in the surrounding areas. With the increasing rent & influx of people coming into LA during the pandemic we can no longer afford to reside in California. We have looked into our housing options here in SoCal, but after a long and hard decision-making process, we have decided that we no longer want to continue living paycheck to paycheck and need to be closer to our families.

My partner and I were recently laid off as of 3/12/22 from our COVID-19 test & vaccination job due to the declining need for such resources. While we have been saving our own money to afford this big move, we could still use all the help we can get over the next 2 months until our lease is up on 5/31/22 to combat our moving expenses.

Our rent has been increased twice in the past 2 years of the pandemic, yet the standard of our apartment has not been kept up to code or to a safe living standard. Our elevator is 6 months out of code, one of our cats nearly fell out of a screened window that wasn’t installed properly in our 2nd floor bedroom, we have no working heat, among a plethora of other issues.

We have both lost our regular flow of income due to being immunocompromised & being unable to return to full-time bar work. I was also recently denied 7 months worth of unemployment owed to me due to my chronic illness disqualifying me. My case was transferred to disability claims & was also denied due to my lack of health insurance. (I haven’t been able to see my therapist/psych all pandemic because I haven’t had health insurance & I need them to sign off on my diagnosed conditions to qualify for disability)

We really appreciate everyone that has taken the time to read our story & we will continue to provide updates here and on social media. It’s been really hard for either of us to ask for any kind of support due to feeling shame & embarrassment throughout the both of our lives, so just making this campaign is a huge step for us. We are at a point right now where we really need to get out to be able to prioritize the care of ourselves & our families & have to set those feelings of guilt aside and ask our community for assistance.
