Kya Bell needs our support,
Kya is a young woman who has already endured what would have been an insurmountable amount of battles for most, but now is facing her most challenging one yet. Kya is partner to Mark, a mother to an outstanding young man of 15 and a beautiful baby girl not yet 6 months old. Kya needs our help.
Over the years that I have known her, Kya has been a tireless advocate for the equestrian industry in WA, she has supported juniors and those less fortunate giving freely of her time and assisted generally whenever she could. All the while Kya was struggling through (and overcome!!) some very difficult problems of her own.
The breakdown of her first marriage and ongoing fallout has meant the Kya has largely raised her son on her own with very little support, at the same time Kya was dealing with a massive weight problem, to the point she could no longer ride. Kya made some radical decisions, rose up and overcame!
Life was not yet finished dealing out difficulties, her career as a Prison’s Officer was made untenable thanks largely to a systematic attack on her public and private life and a relentless amount of bullying. Realising the pointlessness of trying to beat the system Kya took it on the chin and set about starting her own business which is K&M Naturals.
Through hard work and dedication, both the business and her riding career (as well as her health) were starting to get back on track, but as the saying goes, life’s a bitch and it dealt her what should have been a knock out blow. Kya was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Surgery followed to remove the tumour from her Pontomedullary Junction, and with determination, she started the long road to recovery.
Months of painstaking work followed, Kya managed to make it back into the saddle and competed in her first FEI Dressage Test, her speech started to return to normal and aside from the loss of hearing in one ear, life seemed to be returning to some form of normality. Kya and Mark then received the fantastic news that Kya was pregnant with a soon to be baby girl.
It’s important to point out that during all of this Kya continued to support up and coming Equestrians, keep her own horses in form, help out whoever needed it and raise her son. Their baby girl was born and now, Mark (who continues to work away) and Kya, (now aged in her mid 30’s) finally started to believe there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
A few weeks before Christmas Kya went in for a follow up MRI and was soon to find out that another tumour had been found. 16 Jan 2019 Kya had a consult with the Neurosurgeon and was informed the risk of surgery is too great to operate as the new tumour is located in an area that is too dangerous to get to, as it is surrounded by major blood vessels in an area, they call the ‘gateway’ (controls all motor functions, vision, hearing, speech). Turns out the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train!
Kya has a 4 month wait for the next MRI which will determine the tumours rate of growth and ultimately what she has to look forward to. Currently Kya’s symptoms are headaches, dizziness, flashing of light in her eyes (strobe lighting) with numbness and weakness just starting in her left leg. Kya is struggling on, but I have seen the signs of financial pressure creeping in to their lives (bald tyres on the car etc.) and with a new baby and Kya’s worsening condition it’s only a matter of time until Mark will have to return home to care for them all.
Money raised will be used to pay for specialist appointments, medical treatment, rent, utilities and making sure the kids are fed. Please be generous…………….
