On Wednesday January 30th, 2019, my younger brother, Patrick, was finally getting operated on his right knee, after 8 long years of dealing with excruciating pain, making it unbearable to walk, and having to remove between 100 to 500 CC's of fluid from his "bad knee" many times, which was caused by an accident he was in while deployed and serving for the United States Army overseas in Iraq in 2011.
Fast forward to a few days after the surgery to Super Bowl Sunday, February 2nd, 2019. He began to develop a fever, nausea, and his knee was swollen more than normal. We rush him to the emergency room, as he is also a diabetic, for fear that his knee was infected and could go septic.
Once he was admitted, he explained to the doctors that he had just had a knee surgery through the VA for the problems he had after his 1st deployment, and they sent him home without antibiotics. It was then determined by the doctors in the hospital that he was lucky that the VA had not performed any kind of knee replacement surgery, because the parts could have made the infection worse, and that they had caught the infection in time, because he could have lost his leg. At that point he was re-operated on, to resolve the issue of the infection, drain the fluid from his knee, and also determine the cause of the infection.
After many days at the hospital to ensure that he wouldn't get another infection, he was sent home on Wednesday, February 6th, 2019, with a PICC line (an iv that starts through a small vein in his right arm and ends through a large vein close to his heart) to give him intravenous antibiotics non-stop for a month, insulin, due to the medications and his condition (which he didn't have to take before, but is now concerned that he must become dependent upon due to the botched surgery), and a few other medications for his pain and condition.
A few weeks later, at his post-operation appointment, it was determined that he has Synovitis (This is an inflammation of the synovial membrane. This membrane lines joints that possess cavities, known as synovial joints. The condition is usually painful, particularly when the joint is moved. The joint usually swells due to synovial fluid collection.), that the infection that developed from the first surgery was from something used during the surgery that was not sanitized properly, and that the only way to fully recover from this is to eventually get a full knee replacement surgery.
The doctors also told him that he could no longer serve in the military (to which was an honor for him and something that he loved and wanted to do ever since he was a child) or do any type of career that would require lots of physical activity on his legs, even with the replacement surgery, and therefore he could no longer work as a mechanic either, which is his current civilian job.
With all that being said, my poor younger brother has been out of work for almost a month now, not to mention that he has to continue with medical visits (from a nursing company that has also made several mistakes and have been late when coming to check on him, causing some days where his medication was given late) and physical therapy for 12 weeks or more and even with all of that being said and done, he will eventually have to seek a new career that will not require lots of leg work.
And to make matters worse, his brand new home has recently had an issue with the well system, which has caused the water to be shut off several times, which under the current circumstances, is unacceptable due to the fact that he needs to be in an environment that remains clean and sanitized, however the company in charge of this has only patched up the problem and is continuously delaying the repairs of the actual issue.
His emotional well-being has also taken a big hit from having all of these failures and losses come at him all at once. The stress from all of this has taken a big toll on him and our family. Tears, sleepless nights, heartache, helplessness, anger, and sadness.
He has served our country in 3 different tours and would have proudly continued, had these circumstances not occurred, but now I ask that for anyone out there willing to help my younger brother, so that he can maintain his household, health, and lively hood, lift his spirits, and move forward from this disaster, to please consider making any kind of contribution (even if after reading this, you can only send good vibes, thoughts, and prayers his way, or share this story with others), to please help him.
I hope that together, we can all help him on the road to recovery.
Thank you, from the bottom of my, and our family's, heart.
