This September my brother, Eric, passed away. It was unexpected, devastating, and life changing. Eric and my Mom were extremely close, more than just mother and son, Eric leaned on my Mom often as he struggled throughout his recovery process and my Mom leaned back needing Eric to always be her little boy (just like every Mom!).
Well my Mom is missing him, desperately, we all are. Eric was our repair guy, our laugher, and the best hugger in the family. It's a big hole. His life will never be replaced and the future will be different.
But that's not why I'm here asking for help from our friends and family. I'm here because since the passing of my brother my Mom has had a series of small tragedies. First there was a water leak in the basement, which she fixed on her own, then there was another water leak above the dining room, but unfortunately this one wasn't caught in time. The leak ran for a few hours, perhaps a day leading to a destroyed ceiling, damaged hardwoods, and of course a big mess in the dining room. My mom was able to repair the pipes herself, but has not been able to repair anything else due to financial constraints and of course being limited by only have two hands!
On top of the leaks her lawnmower has given up on her in the middle of fall (she also uses this mower to clear leaves), she was in the process of repainting her house and had to put a hold on that to focus on things with Eric's estate, her roof is trying to call it quits as well and is causing a slow leak on her porch whenever it rains (I'd chalk that one up to poor construction), and the list goes on.
What I am hoping is that I can find some kind souls to contribute to help me hire some of Eric's good friends and fellow carpenters to repair some of these things at my mom's house. The plan is to help two people, my Mom and Eric's friends in recovery by giving them work.
What I want to fix at my Mom's:
1. Repair the drywall and ceiling in the dining room
2. Finish painting the house before winter (the house is about 70% painted)
3. Build a gutter system to direct rainwater away from the porch
4. Hang a pergola above the garage that my Mom and Eric built over the summer
5. Work on any other remaining projects, such as finishing out the basement so that we could have a great big Christmas gathering with extra space to sleep and hang out!
I know that most often people don't jump on crowd-fuding to work on general household projects, but this is a special case. My husband and I live in North Carolina and unfortunately are not able to get up to help my Mom as much as I'd like.
Right now my Mom is grieving in waves, some days are good and some are insurmountable. My hope is that by helping to alleviate some of the day to day stresses and the chaos of having to constantly fix things she can focus on taking care of herself and feeling better. Grief is hard. There is no easy route, I'm sure many of you know that. Sometimes the most helpful thing is something you'd never expect, something so simple as helping with yard work or a run to the dump. So if you have $10, wonderful (I can pay someone for an hour of their time!), if you have $100 (I can buy a truckload of drywall!), even if you only have $5 (I can buy nails, paintbrushes, whatever!). My Mom doesn't know that I am asking for this help, in fact I'm sure she'd never ask, but sometimes life calls for desperate measures, so if you can, please help! We would be endlessly grateful!
