Our pal Steve Miller has hit a rough spot. He’s spent the last few months going through chemo treatments for Stage 2 bladder cancer. He had hoped that would be it for treatment, sadly biopsies from late October show that the cancer is still there. Now he has to make the difficult decision of enduring six more rounds of chemo with enough radiation to ensure he never sneaks up on you in a dark alley or undergoing bladder removal surgery. Both options really suck. Chemo and radiation have bad side effects that can be lifelong. The second option, bladder removal, well – who wants to do that?

The icing on the cake was in the beginning of October, the company Steve worked full time for, and with whom he had all of those wonderful benefits Americans aspire to have, went belly up. He’s been fortunate enough to find a freelance job with bosses that are understanding of his situation, and while he will be a full employee in January and will have health insurance, his PTO is limited, and that bladder surgery, which the oncologists are really pushing for, will require a week-long stay in the hospital and has an extended recovery period – more than three months depending on how he heals.
