It is with great humility that I ask for your help. I enrolled at SUNY Empire State College in the fall of 2017. I love it there and now that my kids are older, I can manage the demands of being a parent and a college student. This spring I enrolled in classes and I was thrilled. I was even taking a history of education in America which I felt helped me understand the institution being a parent leader in NYC.
However, in April, I had to make the tough decision to stop working full time (I was temping which would have lead to a permanent role) and be home full-time. The decision was tough personally because I have always enjoyed working and being independent. But it became clear to me that my children needed me more and thus I made the decision be a mom full time. I realized as my children grew older, their needs are different and I needed to be present for many reason. I also withdrew from classes in order to handle things at home. Since I withdrew from classes late in the semester and received aid, I have to pay the balance so I can enroll for Fall 2018.
I am a year and half away from finishing my bachelors degree. My goal is to become a public high school history teacher for seniors. My ultimate goal is to also become a college professor and teach political science. I want to take HS seniors to a college classroom once a week to empower them with the expectation that they need to aim higher. I was fortunate to have this experience as a HS senior and I loved going to class at NYU. I know such an experience would be life changing for these students.
“Be the change you wish to see in the world” by Ghandi is the mantra by which I live my life. So much so that I have it posted above my closet doors (picture shown). I wake up asking what can I do and I go to sleep asking what have I done to justify those words by Ghandi. I’ve had some amazing job opportunities in my lifetime. All of which have taught me an enormous amount of life skills that I utilize to this day. However, in order for me to live by Ghandi’s words, I know my calling is to make an impact on others.
Thank you for helping me on my journey.
