Kuts for Kev
Pa/Kevin suffered a stroke after open heart surgery. The doctors were surprised he survived after his first stroke on the 15th November. A phone call I will not forget. Walking into emergency at Monash seeing Dad unable to communicate and complete paralysis on his ride side was so traumatic. Being told he would most likely not walk or talk again.
Pa/Kevin was a very active 71 year old, playing multiple games of golf a week, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, gardening & just loving life.
Not really understanding the impact of stroke I quickly learnt how this would change Pas life forever. My mum, Aunt and Grandmother worked tirelessly with Pa over the 6 months to try and regain some strength in his affected side, his speech, communication, general day to day tasks like brushing teeth, feeding himself, toileting etc.
As part of Pas rehab we sang songs, counted, talked to him as if he could communicate in hope his speech we return. Sadly this didn’t, for someone who loved a chat, telling a joke, generally the life of the party. This was so hard to watch.
Stroke can happen to anyway at any age! I never want to watch anyone go through this again.
