In 2012 I spent a very cold winter in a 300-year-old Vineyard in a very rural part of Slovenia. During that time I got to witness Kurentovanje and was fascinated by it. The Kurrents, these warm friendly mythical creatures all appear around the villages during the festival, dancing, singing and chasing away the cold spirits. A tradition that has gone on for hundreds of years.
For years I've had the idea in my head of making a film about this Festival and now I have found myself in a position where I might be able to.
The job of the Kurrents is to chase away the snow and bring the warm weather back to the Northern hemisphere, as an all year round biker this means they are also making it possible for my friends. Who've been hiding indoors to come out and play again. So The story we want to tell in the film is of myself and three other old weather bikers traveling to Slovenia to thank them.
I'm now in a position where I have enough sponsors on board that we can do the trip, but while I'm not yet able to do is pay my videographer. I can cover his costs so he's agreed to come on faith that I can arrange the rest of the fees.
So on the 8th of February we will be leaving the country to make our way to Ptuj in Slovenia to thank the Kurrents for their work. Myself, Ed, Greg and James will be facing bitterly cold roads and some very challenging environments showing you that it is possible to ride bikes in almost all conditions.
We will be making two films, one telling the story of this event and the journey leaning heavily into the fairy tales and folklore brought about by these environments and another production documenting the journey and the creation of the first project.
With your help, it's my hope to be able to create a film worthy of showing this event off to the world and hopefully launch a much longer series displaying unique cultural events across the globe.
I can make something decent by myself but with your help I could make something great.
