Kupa'a Llanes blessed our lives on August 11th, 2020. His mom, Carlie, had a smooth pregnancy and delivery and all was thought to be well. Carlie and Kupa'a were discharged without any complications. Kalai and Carlie were excited to have their precious boy home. On August 17th, Carlie noticed Kupa'a wasn't eating well, felt warm to the touch and his breathing seemed rapid. She immediately called his pediatrician and took him in to have him evaluated. At that point his vitals were normal and he didn't register a high temperature. They were sent home thinking everything was fine. They settled in at home but Carlie and Kalai's instincts kept telling them something wasn't right....The next few days were a whirlwind, Kupa'a's temperature kept spiking, he stopped breathing on his own and he had several seizures. Ten days after he was born, he was flown to Kapiolani Medical Center and diagnosed with meningitis. Meningitis in infants is extremely dangerous and can be fatal if not treated immediately. Thankfully, Kupa'a's parents trusted their instincts and got him the medical intervention he needed to survive.
Kupa'a is making tremendous strides in his recovery but there is still a long road ahead. Carlie hasn't been able to return to work and Kalai has been the sole breadwinner supporting their family of eight.
We understand times are hard, especially with the COVID pandemic, so we truly appreciate any donation you can share. We are looking to help cover Kupa'a's medical bills, Carlie's loss of income, travel fare for Kalai to be able to visit and also funds to help sustain their household.
Thank you for taking the time to read, donate and share. Kupa'a is the essence of the meaning of his name, "steadfast, firm, constant, immovable and determined". This little boy is so strong and we are grateful for his presence in our lives.
With gratitude,
The Kupa'a Strong Team
