Mel's Fight

On July 6th 2022, our brother Mel was rushed to a hospital via ambulance due to being hypotensive. Mel required an emergency blood transfusion in which he received that morning. Several tests were conducted to include an endoscopy and colonoscopy and revealed that an 8” cancerous tumor was present and had penetrated the stomach lining. Mel was given the heartbreaking news and was referred to an oncologist for further evaluation. Immediately after being released from the hospital, Mel followed up with the referred doctors and confirmed that it was indeed Stage 3 Adenocarcinoma Gastric Cancer. The news has taken an emotional toll on Mel, family, and friends as this is a life changing experience. Mel will be undergoing several chemotherapy treatments and surgeries in the up-coming months. He will begin chemotherapy on August 8th to shrink the tumor to make surgery easier. Once the tumor has been shrunk then Mel will undergo surgery to completely remove his stomach, otherwise known as a Gastrectomy.

Though it will be a tough battle for Mel, he has prepared himself mentally with the assistance from his friends and family and remains optimistic. Mel will be facing not only physical and mental struggles, but due to taking time off work for treatments and recovery, will also be facing financial hardship.
