help Michael walk
I would like to share a story about this brave young man. His name is Michael. He is 23 years old. Michael is very extroverted and loves sports. He is an accomplished pilot; he started flying when he was 14 years old. He also started his community service at age 12 with the Civil Air Patrol. Michael's wish was to become a military pilot. Everything was right on track until January 2014.Michael was away at college about to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in four month. He was about to have his future launched; graduating with an aeronautical degree, about to marry his high school sweetheart of 7 years (both were to happen in May 2014). Late one night Michael was out going for a run when he has held up and shot. Michael sustained an incomplete L4 spinal injury. He spent several weeks in a trauma center with not knowing if he would ever walk again. The person who shot Michael was never caught but we are very thankful to not have lost him that night. It has been a year now and with rehab and trainers Michael has the ability to walk (a work in progress). As with spinal injuries, Michael still has a lot of obstacles to overcome, but he is hanging in there. We recently had him evaluated for what’s called Walking Aids. These are electrical stimulators that are braced under his knees. As Michael takes a step, these stimulators send electrical impulses down his legs to aid with getting his feet to strengthen and move. This would help greatly with his recovery but unfortunately are not covered by insurance. Price is about $5,000 + fees each. Aside from helping so much with his future and rehabilitation, I (Michael's mother) would love to see him dance at his wedding. She didn't go anywhere- weddings in September!
