THE YOUTH
It’s our graduation film!
We’re a crew of film students and this is our current mission statement, setting out who we are as individuals and the type of stories that we wish to share with you.
As committed filmmakers, we have a natural passion for storytelling, so we’re setting out to create a film with a high-energy focus on vibrancy, movement and colour. We want our story to generate a sense of what it means to be young in today’s world, covering coming-of-age themes such as loss, relationships, and anxieties of the future (with a particular regard to climate change).
Premise
As the end of the world gets near, Oliver (17) - still grieving Flora’s death - travels to reconnect with their oldest friend Sophie (17), who’s been hiding away from shared memories. Will Oliver pull her back into the past, or can Sophie push him into accepting a future?
Shooting is planned to take place in early Spring, meaning we will need funding by March to ensure that this film can be made. Unfortunately, being students, we don’t have the luxury of endless funds to pour into this and only with external help can we make this dream come true.
Donations will go towards helping all elements of production, including paying for actors & locations, rights clearances, equipment, transport, and catering.
Please, help us. Every donation counts.
MEET THE TEAM
Micaela Castanheira – Writer & Director
Olá! I’m Micas and I’m a highly sensitive person. I have a really hard time letting go of things, which is why I came up with this story. To keep the memory of those who are gone alive in a more permanent way than my heart.
Matthew Mulholland – Producer
Hi there! Storytelling has always played a very important part of my life and it is something that I am deeply passionate about. This short comes from a place of pure heart and soul and I am very excited to play my part in getting it onto your screens.
Weronika Chilewska – Cinematographer
Hi. My name is Ron and I have been thinking in images rather than words for as long as I can remember. This project is particularly close to my heart due to its highly stylised and visually impactful nature.
Liam O’Brien – Editor & Gaffer
Hello! I’ve been wanting to get creative with visuals since last year and this film has great potential for visually unique and stunning images. I’ve been training in lighting since June on jobs for the BBC, Channel 4, Disney+ and more. So, I want to put what I’ve learnt into practice!
SET DESIGN TEAM
Acey Court
Hi, I’m Acey and I’m looking forward to bringing this important and powerful vision to life. I’ve always loved the creative process behind film and am looking forward to building upon my skills on this wonderful project.
Esme Caie
Hi! I’m Esme and alongside set design, my interests include reading, watching films, and travelling to exciting new places with friends! One thing I love about ‘The Youth’ is its relatability - themes of concerns about the future and struggles with self-expression - anyone of any age will find at least one character that reflects a part of themselves.
Jessica Arnold
Hey! My name is Jess and I’m a creative, neat-freak who worries about everything. The themes addressed within this short-film really resonated with me and I am excited to be a part of a project with such a strong message.
