Ks for Kids #codePINK
Kids are in crisis.
Across Canada, COVID-19 has led to devastating effects on the mental and physical health of kids. School closures, the lack of access to sports and recreational programs, and social isolation have led to serious effects on the health and well-being of kids. The urgency to support children and youth has never been greater.
That's why I'm training to run a full marathon (42.2K) on August 22, 2021 and setting a target to fundraise $15,000 for Children First Canada, who are declaring #codePINK – a term used for pediatric emergencies. I'm calling on all members of the hockey world and people in my network to join me in the fight back against these devastating effects and to help save our kids. Whether you are a coach, manager, player, scout, or fan, I encourage you to donate - and join me in the run.
If you need some more information, here are some jarring facts:
- Youth suicide attempt admissions have more than doubled in the last year
- Substance-use disorders have tripled
- Child abuse rates have risen sharply, with a 100% increase in cases of infants presenting with fractures and head trauma since September 2020
- Among children aged 6 to 18, 70% report that the pandemic has harmed their mental health in at least one area
- The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) reports a 25% increase for ER Visits related to mental health during the pandemic
- Surgical backlogs have increased by 24% compared to the same time last year
The kids are not alright. They deserve better. If you want more information on #codePINK and Children First Canada, visit https://childrenfirstcanada.org/campaign/code-pink/
