When a new year is approaching, everyone starts making plans for what they want to do; be it party plans for New Year’s Eve or long-term goals for the next 12 months. Mark and Kari Kruse were no different. Making plans with their kids and looking forward to the new year and the new decade.
On December 26th, that all started to change. Mark went to the doctor to be seen for shortness of breath. After a chest scan, he was sent on to the ER for further tests where a mass was found in his chest. He was then transferred from Freeport to Rockford via ambulance.
Mark had surgery to remove the fluid around his heart and lungs and biopsy the mass. A very preliminary pathology report came back as cancerous cells. At this point, Mark was flown to University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mark was under sedation, had a breathing tube, and was unable to communicate. While Mark might not be the talkative type, he wasn’t happy not being able to communicate!
After more scans, the good news came that the cancer had not spread outside the chest area. Mark and Kari, along with their families, waited 9 very long days for a complete diagnosis of primary mediastinal large B cell lymphoma. There was a great moment of celebration when the doctor reported that this is “curable”. Treatment began on January 5th with the beginning of nearly five months of chemotherapy.
Mark will be off work from Spahn & Rose for quite some time as he manages the side effects of the chemotherapy. In addition to that, Mark will not be able to run his snow plow business this winter.
The strain that this has put on the family is beyond measure. The loss of work, health care expenses not covered by insurance, travel expenses, and all of the other costs that this family will incur are huge.
Besides being a family man and an active member in the in the community, Mark is a proud member of the Stockton Volunteer Fire Department where he serves as a captain
Thank you for your positive thoughts, prayers, love, and support your have shared. Mark, Kari, Drew, Gus, and Gracie are grateful for everything!
All fundraising efforts are being coordinated through the Stockton Fire Department and Randy Baysinger, at the request of the Kruse Family. We humbly ask for your financially support for this family in their time of need.
