Kritya Dance Ensemble World Premier

This year I started another adventure with 6 Modern dancers and myself called ‘The Kritya Dance Company’. After Vijay Gupta, the Founder of Street Symphony and a professional violinist, came across my cross-cultural collaborative work, Vijay proposed to collaborate to work on the piece, ‘This Love Between Us’ composed by Reena Esmail. I have always been an ardent admirer of Reena and Vijay so I quickly embraced this opportunity. I feel greatly honored to be able to work with Vijay Gupta, an eminent world-class violinist and performer.

For this 50 minute evening length production I invited 6 Modern dancers to train in Kuchipudi to bring about a new movement style which is well suited for the music we are dancing to. ‘This Love Between Us’ is a bridge between Indian and Western Classical Music styles so is a dance technique I created to bring Kuchipudi and Modern Dance together seamlessly.

The choreographic process began in June followed by formal rehearsals with the Modern dancers starting in July. The dancers of Kritya Ensemble also attend my Kuchipudi classes and workshops to further acquaint themselves with the tradition and the aesthetics of Kuchipudi. We meet every weekend for 8 hour rehearsals and look forward to presenting our work for our World Premier happening on November 10th at The Worcester Mechanics Hall in Massachusetts.

This collaborative project is fully commissioned by Vijay Gupta. This company wouldn't have come to life without Vijay’s vision and commitment to see my unique dance style accompanying Reena’s Music. We have several more hours of rehearsal, workshopping and training to go before we premier on November 10th.
