Kristin's moving fund

My name is Kristin and I am a Disability Support Pension recipient and antipoverty advocate. I got my notice to vacate on New Year's Eve because the owner decided to renovate the apartment building I lived in. The housing crisis has made it particularly difficult to find a landlord who will have me, so when I had to move out of my home last month I was forced to put my life in storage and have been staying with several kind friends since (which I know is a very privileged position).

I was extremely relieved to get a call today letting me know I can move into an apartment this Saturday 30 April, but the cost of storage, moving out of my old place and the fact that my DSP went down because I lost my rent assistance payment means I haven’t actually had lower costs. The rent is going to take up nearly all my DSP, so I won’t be able to pay back money if I borrow it.

Because the rate of welfare payments is below the poverty line I am relying on community support to help me cover the costs of getting back into secure housing. I have done a rough budget of what I am expecting it will cost to move in (below).

I know it’s an extremely difficult time for everyone, and would especially ask other welfare recipients and people on low incomes not to contribute financially to this fund! Your support by sharing this fundraiser would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to donate, I cannot describe how difficult it is to ask for help. Thank you for reading ❤️

Bond $600 (difference between the amount I got back from my old place and the amount I have to pay for the new bond)
Removalist $400
Car hire $200
Pest control $250 (the property has just had its roof replaced, which the real estate expects is going to enliven a lot of bugs)
Cost of storage I have to pay after I start paying rent due to logistics and timing $275
Takeaway meals while I get set up $100
Those bits and bobs you always end up needing when you move into a new place but don't foresee $200

Total $2025
