I’ve been living with cluster headaches, often called “suicide headaches,” since I was 18 years old. These headaches are one of the most debilitating, painful, and rare neurological conditions known. They come in clusters, meaning I can experience up to three attacks a day, for a period that lasts as long as 50 days.

The pain is excruciating and often strikes without warning. Cluster headaches have left me bedridden during these cycles, severely affecting my income, my physical health, and my ability to enjoy life. For years, I suffered without a diagnosis until I was 25. It wasn’t until I was 31 that I had access to oxygen therapy and a medication strong enough to help—but even that medication is so potent it can only be used 10 times per month, and is hit or miss.

This year, for the first time, there’s a preventive treatment specifically approved for cluster headaches: Emgality. This treatment has the potential to give me a somewhat normal life during my cluster headache cycles, allowing me to avoid weeks of agony and restore my ability to work and live fully. Unfortunately, a single injection of Emgality costs $2,600, and it’s not covered by my insurance.
