Kristin Smithers kicked cancer butt!

11/12/2020 was when her nightmare began. The doctor came in and said “You have breast cancer……and it’s not good.” She knew that she was in for the fight of her life. Only 1%-5% are diagnosed with this type….that makes up for only 4,000 people a year in the entire country….“rare and aggressive” was what every website keeps saying and can only be a stage 3 or higher because regular mammograms do not detect this type. Initially she went to Lowell General, whom were amazing, but they only see this type maybe once a year…..sometimes not even that many, So she decided to call Dana Farber – which was the best decision EVER! The staff, nurses, everyone was beyond words amazing, as It’s a long road……but she sure is a fighter……and fight she had to.
Kristin was Med Flighted to Brigham and Women’s from Lowell General....and waking up after just shy of 2 weeks in ICU. Numerous machines, tubes, medications, round the clock care and love. Finally she went to a step down unit for almost 2 weeks and now she is at rehab.
Kristin is working on upper body strength and attempting to gain mobility. She can now get up on the walker and walk a few steps and pivot a little....so that is a huge victory! She will have PT/OT 2x a day here, to get her strong as she wants to be home with her husband and daughters, and family.
She still is doing radiation and being transported back to Brigham and Women’s via ambulance.
Medical treatment is still very much needed now and in the future and all with a hefty expense. If anyone has anything to spare, please do.
