In Loving Memory of Kristen Abella

Two weeks ago, Kristen's health suddenly declined. She seized, went into cardiac arrest, fell into a coma, and despite the work of the best specialists in the country, never recovered. On Tuesday, Sept. 2, she was taken off life support and passed on at 20 years old surrounded by friends and family. Doctors determined she had a rare and aggressive manifestation of systemic lupus with which she had been undiagnosed. The rapid onset lupus crisis caused multiple organ failure, significant neurological damage, and potential catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome. She fought to the last breath.

With the sudden nature of her early passing, Kristen had no arrangements pre-planned. Our family has opted for a traditional Catholic service and burial as Kristen shared a loving relationship with God. We have covered the full cost, but for community members interested in supporting our family during this time, we are welcoming donations to cover up to half of the cost. Any amount is appreciated and considered a gift as the arrangements have already been secured. Alternatively, supporters interested in sharing a philanthropic gift on her behalf may donate to the Lupus Foundation of America or American Library Association.

For loved ones interested in celebrating her memory, Kristen's service will be Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Rosewood Memorial Park from 10-11 AM and her burial ceremony will follow after at 11:30 AM at Princess Anne Memorial Park.

Despite Kristen's struggles with her physical and mental health, she faced the future with unfettered hope, creating beautiful plans for herself during this formative period meant for learning, growth, and self-discovery. She was in the beginning stages of exploring a career path. She was supposed to have more time to decide. But she was deeply in tune with her passions—what she loved about this life. She was a lover of poetry, the arts and philosophy, fashion, and a good hotpot dinner. Her legacy is one of tenderness, open-mindedness, goofy humor, and boundless love.

She is survived by her beloved friends and family and two cats. Full obituary to follow. Thanks to the many who have shared their sincere condolences and thanks in advance to anyone who has provided gifts both material and spiritual.
