Hello, my name is Maurice Simmons and for those close to us who know about our son Brandon being involved in a car accident on the evening of 11/18, which initially left him paralyzed from the nipples down.
Brandon suffered a C-5 spinal injury from the accident which led him to spend one month and two days in Arthur Blanks Children's Hospital where he underwent spinal surgery and recovery. During that time, he had breathing issues as a result of collapsed lungs and was placed initially on a ventilator, which was not working, and then switched to an oscillator to regulate his breathing. Thereafter, he had 5 chest tubes placed to relieve fluid in his lungs.
Through all of that, he made it through and was then transferred to Shepherd Center to rehab from his injuries in late December.
While at Shepherd, Brandon beat the odds because of prayer, his faith, determination, and God’s will. Once being told he would not have any movement from the nipples down, he regained feeling in his body, then regained movement on his right side, and minimal on his left. He went through Shepherd’s inpatient program, Shepherd’s Day program, and now Beyond Therapy.
He then set goals for himself to make his basketball Senior Night, which he did, make his Senior Prom, which he did, and to walk across the stage for his High School graduation, which he did.
As he continues to rehab at Shepherd Center's Beyond Therapy program, which is an out-of-pocket cost for us, we have compiled many medical bills from his hospitalization which insurance has covered most but not all, and then we also had out-of-pocket costs to modify his room and bathroom.
Brandon was also able to continue his High School education while at Shepherd Center through Hospital Home Bound with his teacher Kelsey. This allowed him to finish his Senior year work and graduate on time with his class.
Brandon will be attending Middle Georgia State in the Fall to study Business and continue the next chapter of his life and the quality of life.
We are asking for any blessings to assist us as we navigate through this and we are not the type of family to ask for any assistance, but we have to put our pride to the side, and are truly blessed that our son is still here with us and that he is progressing in the right direction.
Thank you in advance to everyone that has prayed for Brandon and our family, checked in on Brandon and us, and have followed his story and progress.
